And lmao...yes, dick, we know you have the fucking "ability" to pretty much find out everything you need to know about everything. You got multiple iphones, and samsung galaxies, and PS4s and echo dots in every goddamned house. Fuck off, with your "all we need is authorization from the WH, and we could clean this up right away."
And anybody that's enthused about giving the NSA more power or "authorization" to do anything (particularly anyone claiming any kind of affinity for liberalism) just because of some stupid, short-sighted "it might hurt Trump!"...well take a look in the mirror. YOU (and people like you on the other side) are also a BIG part of the problem with this country if "rah, rah, go NSA!" is what you think just because it sounds good in the short term for team blue.

It's going to be basically the ultimate verification of the way the extreme right feels about government.
You have a sheriff's department that is basically saying "We think guns should be banned" but then at the same time, they apparently wouldn't want to actually arrest any kids for political reasons anyway! It's like the ultimate proof of the saying "When you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have guns" in all of its most sinister potential shades.

I'm sure more people choke to death every year than die in school shootings but it's still a horrific thing that shouldn't be downplayed statistically.eCat wrote:Despite the horror of the high school massacre in Florida, U.S. schools overall are safer today than they were in the early 1990s, and there is not an epidemic of such shootings, a new academic study is reporting.
Researchers at Northeastern University say mass school shootings are extremely rare, that shootings involving students have been declining since the 1990s, and four times as many children were killed in schools in the early 1990s than today.
“There is not an epidemic of school shootings,” said James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law and Public Policy at Northeastern. He said more children die each year from pool drownings or bicycle accidents.
There are about 55 million school children in the U.S., the study said, and over the past 25 years, about 10 students on average per year were killed by gunfire at school.
The researchers used data collected by USA Today, the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Report, Congressional Research Service, Gun Violence Archive, Stanford Geospatial Center and Stanford Libraries, Mother Jones, Everytown for Gun Safety, and a New York City Police Department report on active shooters.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
It says there in the text that you quoted that "10 students on average per year were killed by gunfire at school"
That should not be downplayed statistically? And you're sure that more people choke to death? Way to go out on a limb there. About 5,000 people choke to death, probably a significant portion of which are children at schools. This Huffington Post article seems to agree.
School shootings are almost a non-factor in the grand scheme of things called "the real world," and usually preventable in the same cascading event chains that seem to lead up to most major catastrophes such as this. Yeah its horrifying and tragic way to die. But in the same way that being struck by lightning (30 deaths), except that in your choices of who to blame, its basically God or nobody.

50,000 people are dying of overdose. Heroin is a genuine real world problem. Handgun deaths are also a pretty large problem (a mostly inner city, criminal element problem and not an AR-15, white kid at school problem). That said, you're apparently 5 times more likely to die of opioid overdose in this country than to die of gunshot wounds.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
Workplace shootings have been more deadly in recent years, which concerns me more than school shootings since A) we homeschool our kid and B) I work for a newspaper so I'm always ready for some idiot to come in blasting over a recent editorial, which would be ironic since our publisher is a diehard Trumpie and we run about 70/30 conservative/liberal-moderate editorials. Still we get people complaining that we're a liberal rag.
In any event, my earlier point was that people being slaughtered in a public place is horrific, even if, as you say, you're far more likely to choke to death (which apparently is the 4th-leading cause of accidental death in the US). Not sure if you thought I was suggesting we outlaw guns because that's not the case. I want to be able to kill me some people one day.

Here’s the upshot of the PROMISE Program. It was started in Chicago by the current superintendent in the school district in Broward. Robert Runcie was in Chicago. The premise of the PROMISE Program is federal grants. This happened under the Obama administration and Eric Holder. The money came from the Department of Justice.
It originated from the premise that the Democrats hold that the prison population is disproportionately minority and African-American because of injustice in America. You have the black population, what, 15, 20%; the prison population of minorities and African-Americans can be 60%. Ergo the justice system must be tainted. This is what Holder and Obama believe. So they believe that bigotry and racism is resulting in charges and convictions against innocent minority perps.
So they began a program called the PROMISE Program which promised money to local police departments and school districts for ignoring certain crimes, mostly misdemeanors, but not contained to misdemeanors. And for all of these crimes ignored, there would thus be no charges. And thus no convictions. And thus there wouldn’t be any sentencing because nobody’d be going to jail.
So various misdemeanors — and some crimes that are above misdemeanor but not full-fledged Class A felonies — were ignored by everybody committing them. And the reward for behaving was federal money. So the incentive to ignore crime was monetized by a program called the PROMISE Program instituted by Obama and Holder under the premise that American prison populations were unfairly and unjustly African-American and minority.
Even though the program began in Chicago with Robert Runcie who is the current superintendent in Broward County, he was transferred or he was hired away by Broward after the PROMISE Program showed such great results in the Chicagoland area. “The Broward County school district’s adoption of a school discipline policy that was praised by the Obama administration for seeking to reduce the reported number of school suspensions, expulsions, and arrests may have played a role in the fact that Nikolas Cruz remained under the radar until his shooting rampage in Parkland, Florida, on February 14.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
11 teens die daily from texting and driving.
I would concede giving up gun sales untl the age of 21 (all guns because its just fucking stupid to give up one type of gun) if we also ban smart phone until the age of 21.
These kids would shit their pants at the thought of giving it up but statistically they are in much more danger of hurting themselves and the public at large with a cell phone in their hand than an assault rifle. You can argue that driving privileges are worth the risk due to the inherit value of transportation to the economy. I don't think you can make that argument about teenagers with cell phones.
The problem with all these guns control advocates is they are reactionary to an event. Its dramatic, traumatic and a bunch of other atic's when a nutjob shoots up a school and kills children
Then if someone say yea but what about cell phones their response is to write it off with a glib "We already have laws for that!"
yea, well, we have laws against people walking into a school and shooting it up too.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
the primary reason gun control advocates fail is because not only are they reactionary, they aren't honest about their intent. People are always getting worked about about the absolutism of the NRA, the fight against the slippery slope but the gun control argument is so misguided, you can't take gun control advocates at their word.
How would a gun control advocate be satisfied with say a under 21 ban on assault rifles? The answer is they would not, because their arguments are reactionary, so the next time a school is shot up - and there will be a next time if our focus is solely on gun control for a specific demographic of people in a specific situation - by say a 30 year old veteran with PTSD, then the gun control people will be outraged that veterans with PTSD have access to guns. They'll march on Washington demanding laws enacted prohibiting veterans with PTSD to own a gun. They'll go on MSNBC and Youtube and their focus will be so narrow they be ignored as extremists.
The point is there isn't any gun ownership level they will be satisfied with which is exactly why the NRA fights the slippery slope on what at face value seems to go against common sense measures.
If we were to sit down an approach and move away from gun control to gun ownership - and talk about responsible measures for gun ownership for all citizens of well being with the intent that this is written in stone and will not be a moving target, they would get somewhere.
But today is bump stocks, 10 years from now it might be smart guns, 30 years from now it will be self guided bullets or whatever - and no matter what agreement or legislation that is in place, the gun control people will still be reactionary to events instead of having a long term commitment and acknowledgement of what gun ownership is and it being constitutionally protected in this country.
Do I think someone who is mentally unstable should own a gun? Who in their right mind does? But then you see legislation being put together and becomes extreme talking about someone who has filed for bankruptcy could be declared as mentally unstable, no I'm not going to agree to that.
I heard this morning about the police being able to temporarily remove guns from a home where they get a call for a domestic disturbance. If there is an arrest, I'm ok with that...but then they want to go to the next step and say "let the police confiscate guns from people they deem a threat to them and others" ...umm..no, that's the whole damn point of the second amendment is to not allow that.
The police cannot be the decision makers on who is a threat to extent that a constitutional right is infringed. There can be legal guidelines that are clearly defined, but to rely on judgement is what got us in this situation in the first place in Parkland. Somewhere along the way someone decided to tell the police that going to a mentally disturbed kids house more than a dozen times wasn't cause for concern and should be overlooked, where as in every other part of the state or nation, that kid would have been locked up. You can't allow this arbitrary judgement that is community based or even regional
