both my kids have had to read Hatchet in school and write reports about it.

What happened to kids reading The Scarlet Letter and A Tale of Two Cities?

I always thought AA burned down churches because he was an atheist, not because of his racism...

Aetheists don't burn things. We leave that to the religious (burning bushes, burnt offerings, burning witches, burning sinners in an eternal lake of fire, etc) and West Virginia fans (couches).

I had to read Hatchet in elementary school (maybe it was middle school, can't remember) - I still remember one of the assignments was to write a made up chapter for the book. The Scarlet letter in high school. Didn't have to read A Tale of Two Cities for school but did have to read Great Expectations for high school.

I have never read this Hatchet book you people speak of.

I must procure a copy forthwith.

AA will enjoy it because it doesn't have black people in it, but aTm will probably be disappointed because its target audience is tweens, iirc.

My impression of it is that its basically the same as a book I did read as kid called My Side of The Mountain
