I forgot Modern Family. We also watch that.
I like
The Middle because it is so different than all the other family oriented situation comedies. The dad is an alpha-dad. He is not portrayed as some beta-male, bumbling, numbskull, who has to have his high functioning wife hold the family together. Its refreshing that a show like that continues to show fathers and husbands in such a positive light.

I hated The Middle at first but heard people talk about it and decided to give it another try. I like the fact that they are down to earth. They have money problems and the kids are not cute and precocious. I agree on the dad front. This dad holds it together better than the mom. He's got sense. He is strong. Actually, kind of reminds me of my dad.

After
Everyone Loves Raymond (where the dad was a total baffoon) Patrica Heaton went on record in several interviews that the next situation comedy that she wanted to be involved in, she wanted her husband to play the stronger role, the higher functioning role. She said that is missing from evening television, that kids/families would rather watch reality TV than see another faimly comedy where the dad is an idiot.
The comment you made about Mike Heck (Neil Flynn) is the same comment many women have been making about
The Middle, he reminds so many women who watch the show, of their own dads. Which is why they like the show.

Maybe I should have read the book first, but I don't see what all the fuss is about wrt The Hunger Games movie. I thought it was good....3 1/2 stars out of five.
but not Titanic-like, for sure
