the definition of liberal and progressive has change dramatically in the last 30 years. As has conservative.

Kennedy would not be a good democrat and Reagan would not be a good Republican by today's standards.

my point is that liberalism in the extreme will never prevail - and we are at a point where progressives are past the comfort zone of common America. Bernie Sanders does not represent middle American values. His rise, as Trumps were in defiance of Hillary Clinton not being able to create a vision of a liberal America that made sense to people including moderates.

I suppose anything is possible but that seems very unlikely. After the conversation I had with my wife last night and again tonight, I think it's quite possible that we seriously pursue options outside the US. Raising kids here is a lot less appealing than it ever has been.

When I say liberal, I mean anti-authoritarian. Individual freedom in the pursuit of happiness. Equal rights for women, minorities, homos. Porn. All the stuff that people like Prof have, throughout history, been opposed to. But as we can see from the general (about time) acceptance of all the things I just mentioned in our lifetime, liberalism is prevailing.

I'm really not even talking about political liberalism or pretending like real liberal values and rights will be granted unilaterally by government, it doesn't work that way. It's cultural. Many times government or certainly a good segment of the people in government will oppose it, but they can't stop it, hard as many of them try. Certainly these are trying times, but I'm really not worried long term. You can't put the genie back in the bottle once it's out, and it definitely is out now.
