The conservatives will tell you that because a single mom can still get welfare benefits even when she's not married, this will encourage people to not get married and have even more kids. In their view the govt should be more active in forcing people to stay married if they want their govt cheese. In other words, this is one of those instances where conservatives favor govt intrusion and govt social engineering, because they view 1950's-style Ozzie & Harriet families as the evolutionary high point of society which will never be topped. Actually, in the past 20 years or so, single parenthood has increased significantly among the wealthy & middle class. It's no longer considered a stigma to be a single parent.
