Of late nonplussed has been used by some (many?) people to mean unperturbed. Language being what it is, meanings of words change all the time. I am not here to judge, I was just trying to make sure nobody misunderstood what I was saying if they were amongst the parties that favor the newer usage, although it should've been clear from the context. This is a particularly perplexing case, however, in that the newer usage is the exact opposite of the standard usage. I would guess that most words that evolve in their meanings would do so by degrees, not 180 degrees in one fell swoop. I'm kinda nonplussed about it...

I refuse to live in a world where nonplussed doesn't mean 'confused'. Informal word drift and bastardization due to people using words they do not know the definition to be damned. DAMNED!

Oh, I don't think that being cautious to avoid word drift due to ignorance is pedantic. If anything, it is appropriately cromulent.

Anyway, nonplussed is best described as that surprised/confused expression you get on your face when you don't know what to do or say.

Like the time a woman in front of me was going through TSA and they made her do a bag inspection and she pulled put a dildo. I stood there with a dumb look on my face and was wondering why she carried that in a carry on, and was this a protest, and, hey she is kinda cute, wonder if I should say something to her, and are we on the same flight, etc, etc...but I didn't speak any of those thoughts...I just stood there dumbfounded.

Crotch is old enough to appreciate ancient enmities (that's from Shakespeare, i.e., Crotch's coeval). But eCat keeps his eye on the current prize.

Whoops, not quite...

Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
