I had Cobol as a sophomore in 1986 because I was a computer science minor. Spending every night of the week in the computer lab just to get a C+ made me realize I needed to switch my minor to History to make that GPA look a bit better by the time I graduated.

Although it's difficult for me to decide if that's a show of solidarity with loud laughers or the mentally handicapped, it is easily understandable why you feel such solidarity with both classes...

tickets for laughing in your own home, can't buy big gulps, noise from earbuds, I'm sure there is a list 2 pages long of this stuff.

I'd really struggle to be happy in New York

Well, the Big Gulp thing is just in NYC. The laughing dude was Long Island. If he lived in Staten Island, the complaining neighbor would have been killed by now.

What is the "noise from earbuds" thing?

The city wants young New Yorkers to hear its latest public-health warning loud and clear: Cranked-up headphones can be hazardous to your hearing.

So much so that the city is planning a $250,000 social media and marketing campaign to warn teens that they risk hearing loss from listening to personal music players at high volume, health officials said Wednesday.

It's the latest in a slate of efforts by Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration to urge New Yorkers to eschew unhealthy habits, from smoking to drinking large amounts of sugary soda. The prodding has sometimes included graphic ads, such as an online video of a man pouring himself a soda that turns into a glass of glop made to look like fat and an ad featuring a close-up of a smoker's gangrenous toes.

It's not yet clear how the city will deliver its hearing-loss messages, which will aim "to better inform and educate New Yorkers about ways to protect hearing from exposure to loud sounds," particularly long and loud listening sessions on music devices with earphones, the city Health Department said in a statement.

The people to whom the message is directed won't be able to hear it...

Public information is not a bad thing. If they were trying to ban earbuds or issue tickets for those whose buds were dialed up too high, then that would be another thing.

Ironically, I have no problem with the Big Gulp thing, as I don't drink soda; however, I had big issues with the smoking ban and I don't smoke. I can't call it.

Pffft. One thing NYers don't need is the Nanny State telling them how to properly use their 420.

Sounds like the mayor needs to spend some energy in other areas?

I swear to God, some of the commuters on the downtown Toronto streetcars have modded & engineer'ed their earbuds to transmit sound outwards from the headphones

and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I have to essentially buy a small car every year so my toddlers can color and stack blocks. Now, they'll do fine in whatever school I put them in and be challenged in many ways beyond the classroom, under the watch of me and my wife. However, the kids in their school is what I have to pay for. The 10 people you spend the most time with are the people that have the most influence on the direction of your life at any given time. So, I have to pay to impact that as much as possible.
