That might be a minor (very minor) gap in my resume, but I'd hardly compare a modern gangster flick, which by all accounts is very good entertainment, with On the Waterfront in terms of historical cinematic magnitude, and in any case, I have seen parts of it and am aware of it as a cultural icon...

Minor? You admitted you missed more than that. Ever heard of Cable TV? Or is that not offered in your part yet?

Missed more than what? At any rate, as Stu noted, the scene where Liotta was in the grips of cocaine psychosis hit too close to home for me, but enough time has elapsed now that I think I can stomach it...

Kanye would 100% know On The Waterfront and a lot about Brando. Those are the types of things he's obsessed with.
He also has never made the same album twice and I have appreciated each one (even 808s and Heartbreaks, which is not my kind of music but he did a good job with it). I don't know if that makes him a genius, but his talent is real and legitimate.
He was on a Philly radio station last week and dropped this gem though:
People get mad at me saying that I am a creative genius, but it's just obvious. It's, like, factual. [...] I'm not a musician, I don't even know how to play the piano. I would write creative genius when I go through the airport -- and you have to put that in customs [forms], where you put what your title is -- except for two reasons: it takes too long to write and sometimes I spell the word genius wrong.

I went back and read the Lou Reed review. It's spot on with my feeling, in many ways. He did miss the point of "Blood on the Leaves." It's a song about an abortion he didn't want the girl to get.

Has anybody seen The Way of the Gun? Not the western, the one with Benicio del Toro...

Just watched it sporadically (similar to Goodfellas). Yep...

Not comparing WOTG to Goodfellas as a film, just saying I watched WOTG in about the same way I've watched Goodfellas. WOTG tried, but it tried too hard, by about half. Just tried to squeeze in too many elements...
