So after all the GOT chatter I ended up buying the book. Unfortunately, I went through Wikipedia and spoiled the series, so my opinion is likely tainted by that, but my question is... what's the big deal? I remember reading a bunch of this type of stuff when I was like 12-14ish? I had forgotten what the series was called but I looked it up on the internets-"Forgotten Realms" it had some sort of D&D tie in. The author I liked the most was R. A. Salvatore (interesting that these fantasy adventure writers seem to try to tag on to the JRR-thing. RA Salvatore, George RR Martin). Now its literally been over a decade and a half since I read those books, so perhaps the fog of time is making them seem better than they were but they seemed pretty dern similar to this GOT stuff. Is it the treachery and intrigue? Because I know many of those "Forgotten Realms" books were standard sword and sorcery boiler plate but several of the series also included a great deal of palace intrigue stuff. Is it the vast scope? I'm just not sure I get it, Martin seems to have just taken all the most gory and treacherous bits of historical (and some fictional) succession battles and condensed them into a few year time frame and thrown a dose of D&D in to spice it up further. I can already guess what one of the "shocking twists" is going to be for the final two books.

Anyway, I got the book so I may as well give it more of a chance. Hopefully I'll come around on it.

I like the fact that it's pretty ambiguous. the "good guys" arent as good as you think they are and they tend to die off a lot which doesnt often happen.

I used to love stories where the good guys die off, but then they killed superman and that ruined it for me.

There aren't very many "good guys" in game of thrones, period.

I think most people assume the Starks are the "good" guys with all their talk of honor.

I've caught up thru ep 7. the series is moving right along. pretty cool that they introduced Tywon butchering a deer (stag).

Watching Treme (or any other funeral involving someone black in New Orleans), you'd think everyone gets a jazz funeral

I wouldn't mind a second line when I move on.

That's the only thing I miss about my ex girl (before the wife), the whole New Orleans vibe that was always a big part of everything. The food she cooked, her attitude about taking time to truly relax and her father was the coolest mofo I've ever met in my life. Mardi Gras Zulu King come Feb and a respected atty at all times. If I could keep my wife and make that dude my father in law, I'd be a happy man.
