I never really understood why they even made the category of hate crimes. If you kill somebody, is it worse b/c you did it out of hate rather than, say, b/c you wanted their money (or whatever)? Why is a hate crime worse than a greed crime? If you have put your feelings above another person's to the point that you feel it's OK to assault or kill them, you should face the penalty b/c of what you did, not b/c of why you did it.

Supposedly perpetrators of a hate crime are sending the message that all members of a particular race or group deserve the bullet or knife or whatever. So the thinking follows that there are more victims than just the person in the hospital or morgue. The criminal got more bang for his buck so to speak, therefore more finely-tuned punishment is in order.

Sadly, she's fighting a losing battle.

Just keep your girls in team sports as long as possible. Even if she wants to get out of it. I think that is a big separation, socially, between boys and girls when they get into their teens.

I will say that I won't live in certain areas of the country because I have kids that I truly feel would be disadvantaged (from a social and self-esteem - for lack of a better word - perspective) if they grew up there. My sense of self, understanding of history and insomnia (which makes me devour literature of varying points of view constantly) gives me significant armor against those who try to tell me who I am or how the world should treat me. In some ways I know I am underselling those "flyover" parts of the country and oversubscribing to my very expensive, urban environment but I've just seen too much to feel comfortable putting my kids in that psychological grinder. I'm not even shitting on those parts of the country because I truly love - from an environmental aspect - all of the geographic diversity this country provides (truly, America has so many amazing areas that you can spend a significant portion of your life visiting all of these amazing places before you ever need a passport). My kids are just too small and too much in their formative years for me to feel comfortable putting them in an environment where they are the flies in the buttermilk. I can't do it and will do my damndest not to do it.

I do expect I will retire to one of these areas, after my kids armor up sufficiently. Until then, that shit ain't happening.

Jeff Sessions is an inferior legal mind and shouldn't have been nominated for AG. I think he'll pass through but his record shows me nothing beyond the fact that he passed the bar.

The scandals that may come out of this administration is potentially in the Harding range. I actually hope I'm wrong, but it's looking pretty dubious, IMO.

Also, the social media screen grabs of people happy for the repeal of Obamacare and are fine because they have ACA is both alarming and hilarious.
