"There he was again in Cosmopolitan in July. This time he was a millennial who swore off porn. “Of course I liked looking at it, but after awhile, something about it struck me as wrong,” he said.""

See, I've always assumed that in articles like that, they were just making shit up just to fill the space, i.e., the article is basically a work of fiction. I never thought they were actually talking to a real person, however fake his credentials. Certainly I never thought they actually paid somebody to give voice to whatever viewpoint the article was purporting to peddle. Just like in People magazine and all the other ones like it, when they're doing a story on Prince Harry's latest girlfriend, they just say something like, "'They are very happy together", said a source close to the couple". I mean, how do you fact check shit like that? So why even assume that some real person actually said it? Sadly, political reportage is starting to look a lot like People magazine puff pieces, but hey, that's what sells...

That's what has really pissed me off about NPR. I was just the opposite, I always gave the "real" media the benefit of the doubt, but then I started paying attention to NPR when it became Millennial Public Radio about 5 years ago and it hits me that this is just random people with an opinion, 90% don't have any more credibility than me on any particular topic but because they are referenced in the story, I just blindly receive their opinion as somehow more valid than anyone elses. But of course its not limited to NPR, think about that Malaysia airlines flight that went down and how many people were brought on as experts to discuss how it was a terrorist attack.

"90% don't have any more credibility than me on any particular topic"

Don't sell yourself short. Whenever I talk about technology with anybody, I always cite you as my source. Of course, they then ask me who you are and I say "a guy in a chatroom named eCat" and then they say "well, if he's so smart, why do you still not have a router in the TV room?" and then there's an uncomfortable silence and then we change the subject...

just run an ethernet cable from the non-internet port of your first router to the internet port of your second router.

Now you have 2 wireless networks in your house.

Again, maybe I am off but it just feels that way.
The thing is, it may have been a different story if the roles were different...or maybe not; I can't really say. The teens in Idaho where the autistic black kid was sodomized with a hangar by his teammates got a decent amount of press. There was talk of it perhaps being labeled a hate crime, but the prosecutor decided not to pursue that course. In that story, though, the main defendant (the white kid) plead guilty and got no jail time. I doubt the same will happen here (and I do think the perpetrators should see time). I just think that there are some stories where people overreach on racial motivations when black people are victimized and there is overreach when whites are attacked by blacks. Overall, though, when it comes to the justice system it is totally quantifiable that if you are black you are more likely to be found guilty and receive stiffer penalties for the same crime. That's where my frustration lied on the post, for the most part.

Also, in the case you posted, it appears they are actually going to charge the dudes with a hate crime.

The other thing, I think, that made me more frustrated than normal is that I saw the issue come into my scope a few times over the day and it was always on the "if the racial dynamics were reversed..." storyline. Literally, every time it came up (social media, IRL, emails) it was about the racial aspect of it. I just started getting more and more frustrated because it seemed that angle was more important to people than this poor special needs boy facing this type of abuse. It broke my heart (just like the kid in Keller, ID and the autistic boy in Kerrville, TX that was set on fire by teens). As a parent of a special needs child, I have a tough time listening to racial politicization of stories that involve the abuse of some of the weakest among us. It felt like opportunism by people and not true concern about the crime.

I never really understood why they even made the category of hate crimes. If you kill somebody, is it worse b/c you did it out of hate rather than, say, b/c you wanted their money (or whatever)? Why is a hate crime worse than a greed crime? If you have put your feelings above another person's to the point that you feel it's OK to assault or kill them, you should face the penalty b/c of what you did, not b/c of why you did it. The fact that you can't govern your own emotions and urges is why you need to be taken out of society, not b/c you felt those emotions and urges. I hate a lot of people every day on my drive to work, including school kids and the passengers and drivers of the buses they ride that constantly block my progress, but I don't run over them. But you don't jail people just b/c of that or b/c of the racial, sexist and any other kind of curses they can think of that go thru your mind and are often given voice as you sit seething behind the bus waiting for that little redneck/wetback/nigger bastard or bitch to get on the bus driven by that evil cuntlet whore. But if you run over the kid, then yeah, you need to be taken out of society for awhile...

I'm not particularly proud of how we treated kids that were different back in high school, but I can't fathom messing with special needs kids - even back in my punkass days

It doesn't matter whether the victim was black or white, disabled or not, this kid needs to be imprisoned and sodomized. A crime like this should have the Feds come in. Isn't hate crime a federal offense? Where were they?

It was decided by the prosecutor to not be a hate crime. The DOJ could step in and charge under a federal statute...but there are myriad reasons why that is highly unlikely to happen at this point.

The Chicago case was, the Idaho case was not. The Idaho case people wanted a hate crime charge...but the prosecutor decided against it.

There were different merits between the cases, so it's not totally congruent...but the Idaho case resulted in no hate crime charge and no jail time for the perpetrators.

I never liked the hate crime law either because any crime that is heinous enough should be treated as such without extra rules applied. But I realize that justice is never uniform and situations are usually gray. In both of those cases, picking on a retarded person should carry a severe punishment. Those Chicago kids should have to drink toilet water and get the shit beat out of them and the Idaho kid needs to feel that coat hangar up his ass. I'm all for letting the punishment fit the crime when it comes to assault charges like these.
