Re: Tennessee Volunteers
Unfortunately, we are continuing our trend of shrinking in the second-half. At least we have a good lead and are playing an inferior opponent, so it shouldn't cost us.
Deep thought of the day: "I was adopted. I thank my birth mother every day for not aborting me (although I wouldn't doubt her decision if she did)."

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
That was stupid. I know MTSU isn't going to come back against us, but every area of our team, including special teams, needs work/practice. We should have kicked that ball off.

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
We won. And that's good. It sure beats losing.
But I'm not sure we played any better than we have the past month. We still looked good in the first half and lousy in the second half. The big difference was that our efforts in the first half resulted in a nice lead. Arky will still be like climbing Mt. Everest.

Sew e pig indeed. Thanks Arky for my second big scratch of the year (although there were a couple of anxious moments in the first half).bluetick wrote:Three scores? Gutsy.

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
Instead of going to the wildcat we probably ought to fix why we can't hand the ball to our TB and get 4-5 yards against the 112th worst rushing defense team in the country.
Maybe it's the curse of Mike Barry - poor guy had one bad year and Fulmer showed him the door. He had OL's that figured mightily in two national championships - 1990 at Colorado under Bill McCartney, and '98 at UT under Phil. But his guys didn't pound the rock effectively in '02 and he was out. (Meanwhile, OC Randy Sanders got a raise)

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
Was it because of the effectiveness Randy ran Phil's "circa 1983" offense?

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
Randy had walleye vision, gbj - which precluded him from recognizing the middle of the field when working with the offense at field level. Therefore our passing game was limited to out routes, bubble screens and wideout screens. Defenses could keep the MLB in the box as a result, so our running game gradually went to shit as we could no longer pound it inside.GBJs wrote:Was it because of the effectiveness Randy ran Phil's "circa 1983" offense?
Even now - four full seasons sans Sanders - that whole fire-off-the-ball forward blocking thingy has us stumped. We are pretty good at blocking going backwards, though - much to our passer's delight. But we have indeed rediscovered the middle of the field. So maybe eventually the middle backer will back off and our guys will take to some aggressive run blocking and we can find some balance in our offense again.

That was actually very well stated. Kudos.

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
Also, the frat boy kicker story is great. One of the best of 2011. Although, with the starter hurt, it doesn't make any sense that Brodus didn't make the dress list for a home game.

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
Yeah - the kid can do some standup too. When asked if he had planned on watching the UT-MTSU game on tv, he smiled big and said "sure thing.... the first half, I mean."
One more thought about UT's OL situation...Dave Hart and Joe Pendry are friends, and maybe Joe isn't ready to retire after all. And nobody is singing the praises of Harry Hiestand, that's for sure..

Re: Tennessee Volunteers
The walleye was a very effective weapon. Especially version II. It allowed for remote guidance through the very window you wanted to put it in. All via a television camera in the nose section. It was just black and white though.
Still loved working on the old A-7. I'd like to work on an F-4U so I could say I worked on both Corsairs...
