"Guns don't kill people, vol. MMMXLVIII"

A crazed gunman – dressed like “Rambo” and bent on “heading into war” – shot six co-workers and killed himself at a FedEx facility near Atlanta on Tuesday, police said.

TORRANCE, California (AP) — Toyota delivered a surprise pink slip to California on Monday, announcing the company would move its U.S. headquarters and about 3,000 jobs from the Los Angeles suburbs to the outskirts of Dallas.
Related Stories

The world's largest automaker will keep a foothold in the Golden State — about 2,300 jobs will remain in California after the company settles into its new corporate campus in Plano, Texas. But the announcement is an economic and symbolic slap for California, a historic center of American car culture that has been trying to shake its reputation as a frustrating place to run a business, whether that involves shooting a film or selling a Prius.

"When you look at the whole package, it's difficult to be a business here," lamented Torrance Mayor Frank Scotto, whose community on the edge of the Pacific will suffer as the jobs migrate to Texas...

Toyota's announcement comes about two months after Occidental Petroleum Corp. disclosed it was moving its headquarters to Houston from Los Angeles. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been on a publicity campaign to promote his state as a haven for businesses seeking lower taxes and eased government regulation, but Toyota didn't mention what, if any, role Perry played in the company's decision.

Breaking - Texas Power Company Energy Future Files for Bankruptcy

April 29 (Reuters) - Energy Future Holdings, the largest power company in Texas, filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, seven years after its record leveraged buyout stacked it with debt just as prices for its electricity plunged. EF said it entered bankruptcy with significant deals in place with creditors that would eliminate approximately $40 billion in debt, making this among the largest Chapter 11 filings ever.

Energy Future joins a list of operators of coal-fired power plants that have struggled in recent years as new drilling technology created a glut of natural gas, dragging electricity prices downward and making coal-fired plants uncompetitive.

Well, the "forced o sell the Clippers" part has happened, which is fine by me.

Are the Clippers really worth a billion? That seems expensive for a mediocre franchise. I don't think even Magic and Michael and Charles have that much cash lying around.

Oklahoma's "double execution" stopped as one inmate goes into uncontrollable seizures and writhing for 20 minutes until he dies of a heart attack and his veins exploded. Death penalty will be going away in most places soon, folks.

Lockett was convicted in 2000 of a bevy of crimes, including first-degree murder, first-degree rape, kidnapping and robbery in a 1999 home invasion and crime spree that left Stephanie Nieman dead and two people injured.
In 2003, Warner was convicted for the 1997 first-degree rape and murder of his then-girlfriend's 11-month-old daughter, Adrianna Waller.
Sons-a-bitches deserve a little pain.

He was probably an evil man. Though I'm not sure Christ's teachings or the 8th Amendment have disclaimers stating that neither apply to evil men.

Then there's the proven cases of people being executed and later exonerated...I'm not sure how anyone shrugs that off and says the executions are too important to ever stop over a few "mistakes".

Their next cable deal (current one expires in a few weeks) will be a minimum of $70 million annually and could creep up to $150 with incentives. Clips revenues will top $150 million (Lakers are over $200 million). Expenses are fixed and controlled. Sterling is an asshole but he knows how to make money - when they were the worst team in the league he was quietly pocketing $20+ million in net profits. Now he's looking at $80M with a deep playoff run (playoffs are almost pure profit for the home team and bring in up to $2M per game after expenses).

The conspiracy theory out here is:

Mrs. Sterling is the Evil Genius!

1 - the tape came out as discovery in her lawsuit against the bimbo, meaning
2 - the leaker of said tape is Mrs. Sterling, because . . .
3 - she's been wanting to divorce him for years, but . . .
4 - he is famous for locking people up in court, and
5 - he has over 1,000 pieces of property and 5,000 plus units, and
6 - working out a property settlement would take years, even if he was amenable, and
7 - the league knows forcing him to sell is JUST the kind of nasty fight Sterling likes, and
8 - the owners don't want to spend $20-30 million in legal fees, particularly of there's a chance that they'd lose and have to pony up his legal fees as well, so
9 - the simplest solution is to make Mrs. Sterling the team owner, because
10 - she already owns 50% of it (they've been married 60 years - everything is community property) and
11- the team is their best joint asset, so she'd be content to take it and let him have the real estate, or
12 - since he's 80 and they live separate lives, she'd be just as content in staying married, owning the team and waiting for him to die.
