On another note, it's interesting to see Republicans and conservatives issue statements of sympathy for the passing of Mandela. If the Reagan Administration and Republicans had gotten their way, Nelson Mandela would've died in prison and the apartheid regime would still be in place. Dick Cheney himself called Mandela a communist terrorist. The National Review openly defended Apartheid and said it was far preferable to even the hint of a left-wing govt taking over in South Africa.

Global Sea Levels Reach New Highs

The preliminary assessment from the WMO confirmed that global sea levels touched a new record high in 2013, while Arctic sea ice increased slightly after a dramatic and unprecedented melt in 2012, the report said.

"Sea levels will continue to rise because of melting ice caps and glaciers. More than 90% of the extra heat we are generating from greenhouse gas is absorbed by the oceans, which will consequently continue to warm and expand for hundreds of years," Jarraud said.

So it was left to Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin to set the tone, likening the Bush years to the service of President Herbert Hoover.

``Under George Herbert Walker Bush,`` Harkin told a roaring crowd of 2,500 party regulars, ``the rich got richer, the poor got poorer, and the middle class wound up paying for both.``

Without exception, Democrats painted a rhetorical picture of a country

``that is coming apart rather than coming together,`` in the words of Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. And the blame was fixed on the White House.

Gone from the fledgling campaign was earlier Democratic discussion of avoiding strident attacks on a popular incumbent, the successful architect of the Persian Gulf war.

Harkin, who is never shy about attacking the administration, celebrated

``Bush-bashing``:

``If not us, who?`` Harkin shouted at his fellow Democrats. ``If not now, when?``

Observed Brian Statler, a delegate from Concord, ``Party folks up here have been waiting for this, for this sense that Bush might actually be vulnerable.``

Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey joined the fray, ridiculing Bush`s suggestion last week at a Houston fundraiser that the harsh economic climate provided a sound opportunity for big-ticket investment.

``President Bush told a group of people who had benefited from his tax policies . . . that now is a good time to buy a house,`` Kerrey said.

Citing record levels of personal bankruptcy in New Hampshire, and a 51 percent increase this year in applications for food stamps, Kerrey told his audience, ``It`s a tough time to buy a house and hold on to a house. It`s a difficult time to even buy groceries.``

The Obama administration is about to approve a rule that will ensure the death of golden and bald eagles for the next 30 more years.

Hundreds of thousands of birds die each year flying into the deadly turbine blades atop the soaring towers that compose wind farms. The rule that Obama is signing will give wind farms thirty year permits for the “non purposeful take of eagles-that is where the take is associated with but not the purpose of, the activity.’’ The take of eagles is also a euphemism for the slaughter of them.

The wind farms fulfill Obama’s ambitious pursuit of developing renewable energy sources. Unfortunately, some bird species being destroyed by the turbines are not renewable. As a result, Obama finds himself wedged between the ire of opposing green groups. In July, wildlife groups met with administration officials and lobbied against the granting of 30 year permits for energy companies that own the wind farms.

Wildlife groups are advocating shorter leases and insist that a 30-year free pass for eagle “taking” is too long. They argue that before we are stuck with three decades of the rule, there are still some unanswered questions about how to prevent the destroying of the birds. Julie Falkner, the Defenders of Wildlife’s Senior Director of Renewable Energy Programs pondered, “The question is what is the science telling us about how to prevent eagle takings, and we’re still waiting for the science to tell us how that works.”

I wonder how many of those "new jobs" were part-time jobs. I suspect the vast majority of them. Such wonderful new jobs are always derided as "burger flipping jobs" under Republican administrations.

The fact that they counted the return of all those furloughed federal workers to their old jobs as "new jobs" is pure deceit and suggests that all the unemployment statistics are similarly cooked.
