That depends on which part of the public you care about.

And 4 mile? Damn. That's a huge chunk of downtown if true. A one square mile enclosure? Or is it serpentined in a small area?

Ahhh, button-pushing teenagers. I remember those days. Dr. King had to deal with the same shit.

"The DNC has erected a four-mile fence around its convention site at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center."

It's to keep the Bernie supporters from leaving after he speaks tonight...

Can we now say that the party of the rich has now switched sides? I didn't notice the repeal of Glass-Steagall in the Republican platform last week. That's a big switch.

No doubt...

The economy is improving: Nationally, unemployment is about 5 percent, down from 10 percent in 2009. But for black Americans, the unemployment rate is much higher—for them, the economy is still a disaster. Unemployment among blacks was 9.5 percent during the third quarter of 2015 compared to only 4.5 percent for whites. While the discrepancy in unemployment has been volatile, the current gap is actually slightly larger than the one that existed 15 years ago or in the years directly preceding the recession.

Nah, Malcolm just scared white people because he said they were the devil. I don't recall him ever being a party to any violent actions or rhetoric (outside of self-defense); he did benefit from the fact that he was almost exclusively Northern in his movements. I was thinking Stokely Carmichael and SNCC, from an organizational perspective, but mostly random Americans who were pissed at the treatment and conditions of black people and weren't down with playing the protest game.

King was blamed for riots and heated discourse during his time, just like BLM protesters are today. His Letter from a Birmingham Jail (which EVERYONE should read, but most people don't...but OMG is it a beautiful and important piece of work) walks right into the middle of that dynamic. I don't know if I can think of a more courageous American than that dude. There were plenty just as courageous in our history, but I can't say anymore was moreso.

"Letter from a Birmingham Jail"

It used to be required reading when I was in school, and I hope it still is. He clearly knew his Thoreau...

I don't know if it was a good idea to go with the "1984" vibe....

I think the idea was to imply that voting for the same old same old, irregardless of if it's Trump or Hillary, would be the 1984 scenario. But I agree with you that it didn't really come across very well...
