the scandal at UNC has played a part in this. If the NCAA punishes UNC then they are admitting that colleges owe players something of value for their contributions as an athlete - which makes them employees.
What NCAA rule did UNC break again?
we can start with academic fraud and go from there
But is that the case if classes are open to all students? I've yet to see an example of a specific rule that was broken.

The magnanimous Donald Sterling
Alleged Sterling talk being probed
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/stor ... d-sterling
made to his girlfriend who is black and Mexican. This is hilarious.
"It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. Do you have to?" the man believed to be Sterling says. He continues, "You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that ... and not to bring them to my games."

2013-2014 SEC Winter Sports Academic Honor Roll
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sixty-one University of Kentucky Wildcats earned a place on the 2013-14 Sports Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll announced by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive.
UK’s total of 61 honorees was the fourth most among the 14 league teams. UK has five representatives from the men’s basketball team, six from women’s basketball, 12 from gymnastics, six from rifle, 16 from men’s swimming and diving and 16 from women’s swimming and diving. This marks another strong showing for UK’s student-athletes, who had the second-most qualifiers on the SEC Fall Sports Honor Roll released earlier this year.
What say you Bob Knight??

what do you mean if it were open to all students. Academic Fraud is academic fraud regardless of who was in the class.

Scandal update
While criticizing Kane’s reporting, North Carolina has also gone to great lengths to discredit the work of Willingham, the learning specialist, who resigned from the university last week, saying that the atmosphere had become too difficult. Willingham maintains that the university routinely admitted underprepared athletes with substandard reading levels and steered them into questionable classes.
Finding itself at a dead end, the N&O recently sued U.N.C., seeking records about athletes’ enrollment in the questionable classes dating back to the 1990s. The newspaper says it needs the information to determine if there is any link between the athletic department and what went on in the African studies department. The university says that releasing the records would violate student confidentiality.

I think what Stu is getting at is, if it's not solely athletes who were taking those classes, it's not an NCAA issue...

Crean has a novel approach to the one and done situation as well.
His players are one and done, but its because they all transfer to other schools

One of the comments to the Sterling story was something along the lines of Magic Johnson was behind it. Not that Sterling didn't say all that shit, but that somehow Magic had gotten wind of it and got the girl to go public in order for Magic to snap up the Clippers. Sounds far-fetched, but if that was true, that's nothing short of JR Ewing-like. Needless to say, I like it...

Donald Sterling is on some Candyland shit from Django. The thing is, this has been going on for years...it's just that this one may impact other owners' pocketbooks, so now something may actually happen.
