Another bit of information explaining how Trump is capturing the imagination of voters.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national ... story.html

I really don't know if Trump is Mike Tyson...or Buster Douglas.

I ran across this on a message board...

So...on the subject of ethnographic demonyms, lets talk about the term "Anglo"...why exactly does this seem to be the preferred term for white folks when speaking on professional terms. It seems like every minority educator or administrator just loved using the word anglo when speaking about white people.

The thing is it doesn't really mean "white." It means (roughly) "English." So it's kinda understandable that that black/african-american community, and hispanic communties in the USA use the term, since a significant portion of the white populace they are talking about here actually could be considered varying degrees of "anglo" but calling white people from Spain or Italy "Anglo europeans" is just wrong. They are not Anglo in any way. My paternal grandmother and grandfather, pretty much exclusively of central european (Czech, German) descent...are not anglo. My mother's side, yes, probably anglo.

Listen, to my mom all Latinos are "Puerto Ricans," all Asians are "Chinese" and all South Asians are "Al Qaeda."

The newer generations are making progress.

It's all asymptotes, anyway. We can keep getting better and more respectful of our categories, but somebody will always come in and say it needs to be modified for some reason, after a while.

It just occurred to me that maybe its a Texan thing because the original white people were anglos brought here to settle in Mexico by Stephen F Austin. IS the term Anglo common in Philly or New York, etc?

Not really. I have heard it before, but not much. I think I've only heard it in an academic context.

I have a Puerto Rican friend who gets upset if he's referred to as Latino.

as messed up as people thought the GOP was heading into a contested convention

Bernie Sanders has won 11 of the last 14 primaries and still can't make any headway on Clinton.

The democratic party has a huge headache on its hands right now.

"The newer generations are making progress."

I don't know, it sounds like your mom has a simpler, more elegant solution...

Kennedy launched his career as a politician by writing a thesis that ended up being a gook based on peace thru having the ability to conquer your foes. It was aimed at Britian and to some extent France, but was quickly adopted by the United States after WWII.

At the same time the Republicans were the party of intellectuals, inclusiveness and isolationists.

Seems like every 15 years or so there is a major shift in policy

Wasn't that the premise of the TV show "Kung Fu?"
