sometimes that cuban roast pork stuff tastes like cardboard.

I'll put a BLT with fresh sliced tomatoes from the garden on that list. I bought tomatoes at the farmer's market Wed. just so I could go home and make me a BLT

I love pressed Cuban sandwiches. My wife loves Muffaletta's. I'm not a big fan of that olive salad.

that almost sounds like a redneck haiku

Yeah, if you don't like olives, muffalettas are not for you. I love getting a half muffaletta from Central Grocery in the Quarter. There's a little store next door that has 300 different kinds of ice-cold bottled beer. Grab a couple to go with the sandwich then go sit in Jackson Square and eat in front of the homeless people.

Central Grocery is the only place we get them in New Orleans

There are a couple of good places. Central is the most famous, and the best in the French Quarter. Cochon Butcher in the CBD may be a bit better. Definately worth a stop when a mile or so over in the Business District.

And the best poboy (IMO - hotly debated topic) is still at Mother's on Poydras. Just say, "Ferdi Special. Dressed. Extra debis." Also, consider a bowl of their grits as a side instead of fries if available. One bowl is good for two people. Oh, and no tipping is allowed.

This talk is making me want Commander's Palace. It's easily my favorite haunt in New Orleans. Yeah, with a nice bottle of wine, you're going to drop some money. It's worth it.

I heard some guys talking about a place that apparently has been around for awhile but I'd never heard of. I'm going to butcher the name but its something like Gastrays?

yea that is probably it. These guys were raving about it and while I"m not a hard core New Orleans guy, I thought I knew of all the hot spots.

The high in B'ham yesterday was 104F. It should be about that today. The local news did a bit last night that gave "heat tips":

(1) drink plenty of water

(2) turn the AC on

(3) get out of the midday sun

Are these "tips" really necessary? Who, in 104 heat, goes, "Goddamn, it's hot! Wait, what? It would be cooler if I got outta the direct burning Sun and went inside, turned on the AC and had a cool glass of water?? Genius! Thank you, local NBC affiliate!"

Who needed these "tips"?

This winter: "Well, we'll have several days of below-freezing weather: here are some cold weather tips: (1) put on a jacket (2) drink a cup of hot cocoa (3) make sure you turn your heater on (4) do not swim in the local lake naked..."

The same people that always say they are going to "ride out" the Category 4 hurricane at their beachhouse or try to keep their house from burning down in a 25,000 acre fire with a garden hose.

this past week was really one of the few times where I've been in crazy high heat and not have humidity. Its true what they say - it really isn't that horrible. I mean I wouldn't want to dig a ditch in it but just walking around and what not I could tolerate it. We even went to Kings Island in the late afternoon when it was still in the high 90's.

Yesterday we road tripped in our black honda SUV and honda 4 cylinders cycle the A/C when the car isn't moving - meaning to either save on gas or overheating, even if you have the car on max A/C the compressors cycles off and on - mostly off by recirculating the air in the cabin of the car. When you are stuck in traffic for 2 hours things can get a bit testy.

I guess you're right, eCat. But shouldn't we encourage those people to leave their AC off in 104 temps and ride our Cat5 hurricanes and put out those wildfires with a garden hose? I mean, c'mon, Darwin sometimes needs a bit of help.
