FBI on this one. It is a god damn terrorist phone. It won't open the flood gates to hack everyone's phone and take their guns. Sure it is a nice spin for Apple in the PR until something else happens and then come to find out there was something on that phone that could have prevented it and/or assisted in capturing people responsible.

Just hack that one phone and give the FBI what they need. Dont' SHOW them how to do it, just give them the data.

I'm a pretty big privacy guy but I'm not sure how a dead terrorist has any expectation to privacy.

Apple pretty much admits they can hack the phone

so its not like the keys to encryption don't exist

Now if we were talking about joe blow average American who is suspected of doing some bad shit, then I'd be saying fuck the FBI

Yeah, it's not just that. The Feds want a "skeleton key" to be able to get into any phone. The "terrorists" are dead and, therefore, no one is in imminent risk from their actions. So, fuck you, FBI. If Apple were to take time to develop the technology, it would get out. It always does, and the FBI/NSA WOULD use it, and not just in this case.

The gay Auburn-grad CEO of Apple is correct on this one, even if it is PR theater.

The key to get into one phone opens all phones. I'm sure the government wont keep it around or anything unless they decide they really, really, REALLY need to look through someones stuff, or view through the camera or listen through the mic or anything to stop the "terrorists." Besides I'm sure they'll, like, have to get a warrant and stuff.

Exactly, aTm.

Trust the NSA, citizen. After all, if you're really not a terrorist, I'm sure you won't mind me looking through your stuff anytime I want to, whether I tell you about it or not, or have actual probable cause or a warrant or any of that other unnecessary stuff.

Even if Apple, as a soulless entity, doesnt really care about this, from their perspective being asked to do this is pretty unfair. If they have to create this bypass of the security for their phones it also places them at a competitive disadvantage since their customers will know that a security bypass exists for those phones. Even if they eventually have to make this bypass legally, at least they want a real actual, clear law that says they have to have this and more important that everybody else also has to have this so that security minded users dont switch en masse to android or windows powered phones or whatever.

Agreed, again, aTm.

It's a crap ruling and it will be struck down along the way. Further, anyone who gives even as much as a small portion of a tacit, thinly-veiled, halfhearted nod to this ruling is a hater of America and goodness and liberty, and a lover of all things evil.

Was this guy even a real terrorist? He went and shot up his workpace, he seems more like an unbalanced lunatic. If some Christian nutjob had joined a weird church, found a crazy wife, and then came to believe that God was telling him to shoot up his boss after a dressing down, would we need to fucking run the comb over his work phone to try and find some vast conspiracy?

To think of this in another way...If the government of China issued an order to Apple to create this exact thing for a similar investigation...would Americans want Apple to comply?

LMAO...well I guess nevermind on that one. China does require this. So we'll just be catching up.

Totally right, aTm. I was saying all the exact same points. I also was pointing to if China, or Russia, or Egypt of Saudi Arabia, or Syria required the same back-dooring of phones, would people would feel the same way about them asking for a hack as they are about the FBI doing so? I will read the Business Insider link, though. I didn't think other nations had that power.

Well, fwiw, the agreement Apple made with China (although not totally disclosed) is not anywhere close to what the FBI is asking for. This would really be unprecedented if Apple complied.

That does make more sense, but in this case, I think the court of grammar would refuse to hear the case on grounds of disgust...

Well, hedge, join the orgy. You know that you do not want the authorities to have a key that will unlock the horrors of your phone-based web searches.
