Things getting back to normal....the Gandolfini death and Paula Deen scandal have now surpassed IRS/NSA coverage on the Today show. They are determined to get to bottom of how in world Deen used the n word thirty years ago.

The allegations date to 2007.

I happen to be near Savannah right now. Was sightseeing in the historic district just yesterday. Deen's firing is big news locally, needless to say.

We eat there every year. Hopefully the wait is shorter this year.

Mitch McConnell raised the White Flag on the IRS scandal yesterday. Basically he admitted that there's nothing that proves the White House ordered the IRS to attack conservative groups. Still don't understand the whole Paula Dean thing. She admitted using the N word years ago. She lives in the South. Shocking!

When you are raised a certain way sometimes things just blurt it out of habit. I still say the word retard once in awhile but catch myself. Nigger is a bad word today but until they can prove she said it in the last 10 years this is nothing but the media trumping up something that isn't there.

If Paula Deen gets fired from the Food Network for using the N word, then why don't rappers get into similar trouble when they use the N word? (And they use it a lot.)

That being said, using the N word wasn't her biggest problem. She apparently also tried to set up a wedding with an Old South theme, complete with having black employees role play as slaves. That wasn't a slip. At best, it was incredibly stupid.

Only white people can be racist. It's a natural law like gravity and the speed of light.

Nothing beats middle-aged southern white guys complaining that blacks can use the 'n' word without getting into trouble but THEY can't. IOW, you've wanted to use the word numerous times, but held back, and resent that?

I thought it was a reasonable question. Why is the same offensive word treated with two vastly different standards by society? Please use reason in your answer. TIA.

it's nothing new and every nationality/race uses terms that while derogatory are used commonly among kind as a term of endearment

What T Dot said. I've heard Italian guys calling each other "dagos" or "goombas" as well. Doesn't open the door for everyone to start throwing the words around. It's part of fighting back against the bigotry to use the word yourself. I know not everyone in those communities feels that way, and some prefer the words would just completely go away.

I think the most acceptable name to call someone of any race is "idiot". Or "Jackass", "cocksucker" or "dickweed". Everyone can use those
