And NC State beat Notre Dame at Notre Dame, as well. Auggie should be in his hey day right now.

When did UNC claim that its athletes were smarter or better students or that we only accepted students who performed better academically or on standardized tests than we were required to? You cite some report about 180 athletes over an 9 year period (which surprised me, I thought it would be more than that), when UNC admitted probably 50,000 total students over that period. Are you seriously claiming that any UNC fan has tried to act like our athletes are the same as the rest of the student body? That we don't admit athletes that would never come close to getting in if they weren't athletes? That's just tomfoolery on your part. The fact that some tiny fraction of one percent of the student body is treated differently than the rest is no reflection on the overall academic quality of any college. UNC has a law school, a med school and offers PhD programs in lots of different fields. Are you suggesting that the education that the obviously highly intelligent people who complete these programs really didn't get a real education? Again, pure tomfoolery on your part to try and besmirch UNC's overall academic reputation based on 180 athletes over a 9 year period...

That's the first time I've used "besmirch" in here...

yes, I've heard that shit from you guys for years here and quite frankly I'm a bit disappointed to hear now that UNC has been shown to be no better than Miami University in regard to its "student" athletes, that you guys are readily accepting it - and even trying to marginalize the impact of it.
and any attempts on your parts to tell me otherwise is revisionist history.

I think the way things run at UNC now is not the same as during the time Dean Smith presided over the athletic program. At the very least, he never got caught doing anything wrong and that's the greatest sin of all. Revisionist history comes from those lumping the current issues in with the past.

Dean Smith was 15 years ago!
That's one thing I'll give you UNC guys, you *never* apply the past reputation to the present

Are you saying 15 years is a long time or not a long time? Seems pretty long to me considering how quickly things can go downhill, esp. after some losing seasons.
I have no doubt there were very few of the 90 whatever percent of Dean's players who graduated did so in legitimate fashion, at least as legitimate as scholarship athletes in revenue sports are wont to do. But things started to change around the time Dean got out in the fall of '97. High school athletes, through the Internet, were getting more recognition than ever and were less inclined to follow the traditional route of keeping up with academics and knowing their roles on the team.
I doubt very seriously that Dean Smith would be nearly as successful a coach today because he wouldn't be able to land the type of players necessary to win. And if he did, they wouldn't be happy playing in his system. Just look at the '94 team that had so much talent but couldn't figure out how to make it work when the two best players were freshmen. I can't imagine there's a coach out there today, esp. Calipari, who prefer this new atmosphere of top players staying just 1 year in college. I know Dean Smith wouldn't be able to hack it.
so yeah, things have changed a lot in 15 years when you really look at it.

Are you saying 15 years ago as in that wasn't that long ago? B/c UK fans were sure acting like it was an eternity that they hadn't won a championship (or even gotten to the FF) in alot less than 15 years...

this Kentucky team isn't a bad team but they are no where near their potential, and I'm at a point where I don't think its possible for them to improve.
They had 11 days of practice to improve their game and I don't see anything that has improved with the exception of Randle passing out - which unfortunately results in a more often than not missed 3 pointer.
So far this game has been a huge let down - even if we win.

The big men are pussies. UNC has not developed a big man from a semi-talentless hack to an All-American since Haywood. I wish Gut could work with the current team. Say what you want to about him as a head coach, but he could coach big men.

Meeks is not a pussy UNC is the best player,
ROy does not play him because he not explosive enough,
UNC should play ZOne but Roy is too stubborn
and Britt sucks

He isn't explosive, and he plays soft at times.

big men aren't our problem, its our guards - the starters won't commit to playing hard the entire game, and if they don't do that, smaller faster guards just eat them.
