its weird that nothing was said on his part. You'd think he'd react somehow even if he was intent on crashing the plane.

No profit in saying anything. By not saying anything, you hurt the family members more - no closure.

I'm sure he knew the code, but there is a five-minute lockout if the person inside hits the "deny entry" button.

They are not even sure if the door had a code lock. Not required over there.
