I asked about this before, somebody said get a signal extender, but why can't I just hook up another modem and wireless router in another spot in the house? We've got cable running into the back room which is split (one line for TV, the other for internet) and one of those lines is hooked into the modem which is hooked into the wireless router, but the signal is spotty at best in the front room. But we've got cable running into the front room for the TV, why can't we split that cable (just like in the back room) and run one of those cables into another modem and then hook that modem up to another wireless router and have it sitting RIGHT THERE IN THE FUCKING FRONT ROOM where we spend 95% of our lives and have FIVE FUCKING BARS AT ALL TIMES???? Can I not do that? If not, why the fuck not??? If I can have a fucking modem and wireless router in one goddamn fucking room that is 10 miles away from the front room, why the fuck can I not have another modem and wireless router hooked up in another room? Why the fuck can't I put as many goddamn modems and wireless routers into as many goddamn rooms as I want? Or even put 3 or 4 in every goddamn fucking room in the goddamn house??????? Well, forget that last part, but can I at least hook up a modem and router in the front room??? The fucking answer better be yes, but if not, why????

Why not run a cat5 cable to the other room and all you would need then is another wireless router.

yea, just connect another wireless router to the ethernet cable going into the room - plug the ethernet cable into the "internet" port and then go into the router and make sure its not assigning the same ip address ( 192.169.1.x) as the first one

typically whomever is your internet provider has a dedicated line for your modem even if it splits off to another TV in the same room.

Ecat is right. You can get another wireless router but you will need to configure the wireless part of it exactly like the other one or you will have issues. You must also setup it up as an access point and not a router (meaning it does not give out DHCP). Most likely your current wireless router is setup as 192.168.1.1. When you configure this, you will want to give it an IP address of 192.168.1.2 and for it NOT to give out DHCP addresses. Helpful if you can purchase the exact same wireless router you have also so it is easier to setup.

OR, just by a signal booster that you put kinda in the middle somewhere. All it should need is power. It''s purpose is to find ANY wireless signals and boost their signal so your front room should get it with out any issues.

Or you can STFU and quit bitching.

I bought a new router but can't get it to get internet. I think the lightning strike that torched my old router also fried my modem but it looks like it works. Guess I'll wait for my 15 year old to get home from school.

actually I don't do that - I just make sure they don't conflict so one router is doing DHCP on 192.168.1.x and the other is doing 192.168.2.x. I am running the second router from a switch hub and not directly from the second router though.

After second thought, maybe the best thing for hedge to do is get a "N" dual band router with extended range for $40 and be done with it. Cisco makes a pretty good one. Unless he is living in a house with plaster walls, his neighbors would get 4 bars with that router.

I bought a new router for like $70 (Belkin N-650 I think, it claimed it had great range, the next level up from that was like $125), but the MIF's house is a fortress, built in the 1950's and definitely has thick plaster walls. The router now sits by the desktop computer in the guest room all the way at the other end of the house, while we spend most of our time in the den. No way to run a cable from the guest room to the front room except under the house. I guess I'll try the range extender again, although I did get this external wireless pickup thingy that you plug into the USB port of the laptop, that seems like it's boosted the reception some...

What if we had a desktop computer in the front room as well? How would that be hooked up to the internet? Wouldn't you need to run the cable into a modem in the front room and then plug the computer into that to pick up the internet? And if that's the case, why can't I just set up another wireless router in the front room? I just don't get why you can't have the internet signal coming into more than one fucking point (modem) for the entire house...
