If you don't know the history of the author you don't know what you're reading. Heh, Washington Times.

It was transparent in that the depositions were not sealed, however the protocols (interview with officer, bagging of weapon, review of forensics) were all executed extremely - if not egregiously - late (at least by NYPD standards). Rarely do you see the defense testifying in a Grand Jury trial. There were a lot of things that were not done in the normal fashion, but I don't think I would classify it as "fair." Abnormal, yes, not fair.

Big cats and gators are too pussy to stalk and kill in New Jersey. Chalk another one up for the large caniforms.

The thing is he was hiking with a group of friends and that's a black bear....not a brown. Wonder if they tried to run (never run, they're quicker than you).

In sum, don't run from a bear nor at an officer w/a gun.

It depends on where your bar is. One man's justice is one man's OJ trial.

I think the lesson learned here is...never be the slow man in your group...

Logan would claim he could kill the bear with his bare hands...

If I was that close to an adult bear, I would have learned to climb a tree.

Yes, bears can climb tress but at least I'd make that sumbitch work for his meal

They say bears are fast but can they cut back and forth like Barry Sanders? They are burly and have wide hips so I suspect if you could juke and weave you could pick up some valuable ground.

grandpa used to a tell a story about a guy leaving a bar and walking home, was attacked by a bear and came back into the bar - scratched up a bit but none the worse for wear. When the bar patrons asked the man how he survived he replied "bears don't take to eye gouging"

All the more reason to make a grapefruit spoon part of your regular pocket collection. Nothing takes to an eye gouging.

homicide is the murder of someone - unintentional or not

That choke hold cop committed murder - I know he didn't intend to, but that is irrelevant.

So I see a definite contrast here and the Michael Brown situation.

And I'm surprised the Mayor of New York - De Blasio or whatever his name is - hasn't been more engaged in this situation.

Can't wait til I have time to respond to your post. It was illuminating to me...as far as how some people (using your missive as my anchor) view the situation, versus others. These instances are all the same to the Black community. Mike Brown, this Garner kid, the Tahir boy in Cleveland. Some may see them as separate incidents while a lot of people see them as more data points on a chart that started in 1619. That's why the woman breaks her own dishes in her kitchen when she has reached a boiling point.

My students were divided at the beginning of the semester on this, some saying that they wouldn't represent Michael Brown, some that they wouldn't represent the Police shooter. That is, til I ripped them for deciding before they knew any facts. As for the Michael Brown case, we still don't have enough facts to say one way or the other. Three things, one, Brown was a bully. Two, the policeman's interview didn't smell right (he can also be a bully). It had a lot of holes and a good prosecutor still can rip him apart. 3rd: Another grand jury can still indict him, or another prosecutor can take him to trial. He has not had his day in court, so there is no double jeopardy involved. He can take the fifth and not testify, but that interview he gave can be used against him.
