The mental part is easy. I'm sure most addicts would prefer to kick, but nobody wants to go thru the physical hell of it..

"There is a myth that opiate withdrawal is physical torture and reduces serious addicts to quivering, sweating messes on the brink of death. In fact, it lasts about two weeks, is no worse than a very bad fever, and has never killed anyone."

Withdrawal may have never killed anyone, and it doesn't last two weeks, but the part about the sweating, quivering physical torture is no myth...

Alcohol withdrawl is the worst. I've seen many die from it.

I have heard that as well, One difference, though, is that you can be on opiates for just a few months and not really even have that bad of a habit and you're going to go thru withdrawals if you quit. To get to the point of going thru bad withdrawal on booze, you have to have been drinking massive, incapacitating amounts for years. You have to pickle your body and brain for a long time to get to the point suffering withdrawal if you quit. I drink pretty much every day (not as much as when I was younger), but I can easily go a few days or longer without drinking and I don't even think about it, much less suffer anything approaching physical withdrawal...

Not really. It doesn't take years of drinking to experience withdrawl. You can build up tolerance pretty quickly. 12 drinks a day for a month & then suddenly stopping isn't a good idea.

12 drinks is basically a fifth of liquor, that's alot to be throwing back in a day. But I do know that different people metabolize alcohol differently and in fact some experts think alcoholism is essentially a metabolic issue. OTOH, anybody who uses opiates (even just pills and for just a short time) is going to feel at least some slight discomfort when they quit. Maybe not a few vicoden over a few days, but anything more than that and it's going to start to stick...

heh...it took 2 weeks to get over that shit too. I can see why people break down and revert - at one point I was sleeping about 20 minutes, then waking up with cotton mouth, take a drink from a water bottle and then sleep another 20 minutes. That sucked ass.

Now I'm just a zyrtec addict

12 drinks a day is nothing. That gets you to about 4-6 pm for a normal drunk.

I played the DG course at LW about 2 wks ago. But not real DG, just with my tiny 1966 Wham-O! that I found in the bushes at my house that belonged to the kids who lived there that are now in their 40s.

But yeah, the Lake Wilson course is good. There's also one at Gillette Athletic Complex.

I'm guessing he went the Hunter S. Thompson route. When he got to the point where he couldn't do what we wanted, he wasn't going to tolerate a life of death by degree.

In that case, I wish IB would retire...
