Bruce Pearl lied about a bbq cookout and got expelled from coaching for 3 years. His 1st offense mind you.
Meyer lies about spousal abuse and destroys evidence and gets 3 games.

Just more evidence of the unfairness of the NCAA. Why should Tennessee get that kind of unfair advantage??

Because the NCAA feels bad for UT. As much as they keep trying to cheat they are stupid enough to get caught and still suck anyway.

that's got nothing to do with the NCAA
Bruce Pearl lied to the NCAA about an ongoing investigation
Meyer lied to a reporter during a media day.

Pearl lied to an investigator about a photograph, regretted it and came clean a few days later. NCAA said he should have come clean before the investigator pulled out of his driveway. 3 years..bam.
Athletes lose an entire season or worse for DUIs, positive drug tests, taking booster money, academic cheating. Hell, Ohio State players sold their jersies and got suspended FIVE games.
Meyer sat on knowledge of Smith's abuse, lied about it publicly, and tried to cover it up. OSU should've cut him loose. 3 games is a joke.

The police and prosecutors knew about it and didn't charge Zach Smith. The AD knew. Courtney Smith's own parents knew and have subsequently said that she is full of shit.
I mean it would be one thing if Meyer had orchestrated a cover up to keep the police from investigating or the AD from knowing or her own parents from being told, or whatever... But all those parties knew.
Meyer lied to a reporter, but he even has deniability on that. The original McMurphy article talked about Zack Smith being arrested in 2015 and he was not. So, if Meyer says he 'doesn't know anything about it' he can say he was talking about an arrest detailed in the article (which never happened). I don't personally believe that angle, and will concede that he was untruthful to a reporter. But Meh.
There is no doubt that Zach and Courtney had a shitty marriage but I can see Meyer going "the police have been called and did not charge him, all the stakeholders know - from her parents to the AD - and while Courtney and Zach have a shitty marriage will that marriage and the kids be benefitted with him unemployed?" And electing to not fire him until he is charged with something.
But whatever. It's done. I am not an Urban Meyer or OSU fan. But if I had been on that panel, I would not have recommended any additional suspension. Time served and that's it.

is it the severity of the lie? I mean, he can lie about the condition of a player, about the reason a kid transferred, why he doesn't want to play an in state rival, there are no shortage of "acceptable" lies he can tell.
But this one crossed a line on media day?

Yep. Domestic violence cover up is way bigger than a tattoo cover up.

Covered up the alleged domestic violence from who? The police knew, the prosecutor knew, her parents knew, the AD knew....

Everyone gets their panties in a wad whenever the words domestic and violence are joined together. People have bent over backwards to install protections and make it the new societal scarlett letter, and though domestic violence is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, there are far too many instances in which people jump to conclusions and in which people abuse the system for personal gain.
Thankfully, many of those who have been wrongly accused have hired me over the years, and as a result of their wise investment, I have been able to remove the unwarranted stain upon their reputations.
