The way this site works it doesn't seem to me that it would ever need more than one SQL connection open, no matter how many users were on.

Basically there is only one "user" that logs into our SQL server. It is basically is our database, that includes all of us. When one of us does something, it logs in under our php database login and changes the necessary tables in the php database. So if Jungle Rat comes in and says some inane shit, the goatpen phpbb database logs in and adds a record containing his post to the database table and in that record it stores that jungle rat was the user that logged in and made the postk, etc, and then presumably it goes inactive until the next time it needs to update a table. I don't see why the goatpen database would be creating all kinds of new connections to the SQL server unless it was literally getting many posts at the same time and trying to connect and do them all at once. But it doesn't work that way. Even when we post it doesn't add them in real time, it query's the server and shows you any new posts that have happened in the mean time. It seems like it does things sequentially.

User goatpen_php1 is this site (the message board database user). Any time we do something, that user queries and makes changes to the database. So you error code makes it seems like this is indeed happening and goatpen_php1 is holding open multiple connections at some times for some reason.
