Dr. Strangelove wrote:So Missouri, in only its second year in the SEC, with a roster full of guys recruited to play in the Big12, is on the verge of winning the SEC, and this is considered a year where the SEC was especially strong?
Who said 'especially strong'? The comment in question was about 'everybody saying the SEC is down'. There is a perception that because UF and Tenny are down the league must be down but I'd characterize a 1st tier of Alabama, Auburn, and Mizzou, followed by a 2nd tier of Carolina, LSU, and TexAM as not too shabby. Toss in Georgia before they lost Murray and receivers. Do any of the other conferences have a 7 team lineup to answer that?

Stanford, Oregon, Arizona State, UCLA, USC, Washington, and Arizona is probably close. More so than your average SEC fan cares to admit. But the broader point is whether Auburn's schedule was so extraordinarily difficult that they merit jumping ahead of OSU even if OSU handles Sparty.

By no objective measurement (computer polls) did Auburn play a brutal schedule and their OOC was just as bad as ours or FSU's was.

And I will say again that the SEC fan's standard argument on why you deserve preferential treatment is that no one else in the country could survive an SEC schedule without multiple losses. Every week is a grueling war. Even Kentucky and Miss State. Missouri has already largely disproved that, playing with a team full of non-SEC players, and they will shatter the myth should they beat Auburn. I hope Malzahn and the team are actually paying attention to the team that's in front of them instead of politcking like Jay Jacobs.

All this talk about Auburn jumping tOSUc is premature. We are a very good team, but we needed two, back to back, once-per-25-year miracles to get where we are. And Mizzou is an excellent team. True, they played in the weaker division with essentially one good opponent (that they lost to). But they are fully capable of beating us.

Sagarin says Auburn played the 26th toughest schedule in the country. That's not, IMO, so extraordinarily tough a schedule that makes me ignore that they were dominated by LSU in a LOSS. Or that they didn't beat a single decent team by more than a TD

If you want the BCS and the voters to do something totally unprecedented, you better have something stronger going for you than "we beat Alabama on a fluke play! Ain't that enough?!"

Missouri beat Georgia, A&M, and Ole Miss by larger margins than Auburn did and the same margin against Tennessee (Missouri won 31-3. But I guess when you're in the BRUTAL West, where there are no bye weeks, no easy OOC games, and not a chance to even sleep, you get so durn wore out that you can't be blamed or penalized for letting Mississippi State almost beat you

When you play a lot of good teams like we do in the SEC, the margins victory tend to smaller than when you are mediocre but play a series of dry goods stores and haberdasheries like you do in the B10.

Washington State is the 9th best team in the Pac12 and you were outgained by them and needed some good old fashioned SEC refereeing to bail you out.

And that wasn't after the Mississippi State game either so you couldn't have been THAT exhausted.

(BTW, Bowling Green reports that Mississippi State is the most WARlike team they've ever lost by one point to)
