EFZ.

That was like a better version of the Volkwagen commercial with the A Ha song...which I love, btw.

That's interesting that he chose 30 years as the time frame, particularly in light of this (starting at the 1:52 mark, but watch the whole thing, it's only 3 minutes):

Didn't Hendrix play with Little Richard? I think the story is Hendrix was so good Little Richard threw him out of the band for showing him up on stage.

wikipedia said he played with Little Richard but doesn't mention any animosity between them.

I did read this

Hendrix completed his paratrooper training in just over eight months, and Major General C.W.G. Rich awarded him the prestigious Screaming Eagles patch on January 11, 1962.[38] By February, his personal conduct had begun to draw criticism from his superiors. They labeled him an unqualified marksmen and often caught him napping while on duty and failing to report for bed checks.[44] On May 24, Hendrix's platoon sergeant, James C. Spears filed a report in which he stated: "He has no interest whatsoever in the Army ... It is my opinion that Private Hendrix will never come up to the standards required of a soldier. I feel that the military service will benefit if he is discharged as soon as possible."[

damn, that's nothing to sneeze at.

ahh..here it is

The video recording of the show marks the earliest known footage of Hendrix performing.[62] He often clashed with Richard over tardiness, wardrobe, and his stage antics, so in late July 1965, Richard's brother Robert fired him.

you gotta be doing something to make Little Richard upset with your wardrobe.

Lil Rick probably didn't want to share the spotlight, esp. with a mere contract player, but I'm sure much of Hendrix's stage theatrics were gleaned from watching and playing with LR. I recall reading that it was more of Hendrix's unorthodox playing style that riled LR. Not that LR wasn't flamboyant himself, but there's a difference b/w popping it clean on a piano and turning an amp up to 11 with full distortion and feedback, etc...

Garcia and Hendrix are probably tied for the most Beetle Bailey like soldiers ever IRL.

Lou and his crowd were much more of a throw-back to the pre-hippie beats, with a generous helping of the Andy Warhol set of avant guard (sp?) (some might say pretentious) New York art world. I would say that the Velvet Underground, with Lou as the driving force, were as influential as any rock band has ever been, or at least very close...

I've told the story in here a few times (and the last time rather recently, IIRC) about my encounter with Lou at Oven Auditorium in Charlotte. Now then, I only spoke to him for a few minutes, and I would never try to represent it as if we were the best of friends, but I'm sure he cherished that memory of meeting me at Oven Auditorium in Charlotte. That was probably the final thought he had in his mind just before he shuffled off this mortal coil. Rest in peace, Lou...

In memoriam, I offer up this interesting ukelele cover of on of VU's better-known songs:

Tool is more influential than Velvet Underground.

lol

I don't get the hate for Tool. I think they have some catchy tunes. Their stuff reminds me of STP or PJ or whatever - all of which I like (but don't really love).
