I like this commercial, esp. the clerk's heartbreaking "You too!"...

Pay up Bluecat. I told you he'd make it to 50. Too bad Mook isn't around though. He bet me hedge would see 51. I bet against that.

My buddy took his wife to Chicago last weekend to eat at that restaurant Cletus mentioned awhile back (Alinea?). He said he got a stomach virus before they went and had to stop after the third course. He said it was more expensive than some fancy restaurant in NYC we went to a few months back (Per Se). If that's the case, I doubt I'll be eating there anytime soon...

It's a big number (I think it was $950 for two the last time we went) but it's worth it.

The number was bigger than that at Per Se and he said this was more. He also said something about helium balloons. What's up with that??

I just looked on the website for a table for 2 next Thursday and it's $585 including tip and tax but before the wine pairings. Every time I've gone, the wine has been about 2/3rds the cost of the food so, if that rule of thumb still holds, then you can add about $350. That price is in line with what I've paid in the past. They do have a huge wine list so I guess they could have ordered some bottles from that and pushed the price. But, if they did the food plus pairings, then $950-$1,000 should have been the price.

One of the courses they do sometimes is make balloons out of an ingredient (usually cheese or a sugar based thing) and serve it during the dessert part of the meal. Here's what it looks like:

We got the wine pairings and I'm sure they did the same. When we ate at Per Se, we didn't get the full tasting menu and it was still just north of $1000, but I think that was including the tip (we should've gone the AA route, but needless to say, the service was excellent). But we didn't even get the full tasting menu, although it was about 8 courses, IIRC...

Alinea is something like 24 courses and its' the only option. If Per Se was about $500 a head that's in line with Alinea. I don't know how last night was more expensive unless he got some sort of reserve wine pairing which was a lot more expensive than the wine I've had. Regardless, it's a big bill but totally worth it.

Per Se has 2 menus. I enjoyed the food and the experience, but I'm not enough of a foodie to pay that kind of money for a meal. I don't regret it, but unless my income increases substantially, I can't see myself indulging in that kind of thing again anytime soon. My buddy, OTOH, is more like you. He loved it. But at the same time, we went to a bunch of different restaurants that he had picked out, some of them pretty expensive but nowhere near Per Se, and others that would be fairly expensive around here, but about what you'd expect for NYC, and I liked those just as much as Per Se, at least as far as the food (my favorite was Mamafuko (sp?)). But as far as a unique experience (for me, at least), the room, the service and the view (Central Park), Per Se would be hard to beat. But I just can't justify dropping 5 bills for that kind of experience when I know how much good drugs and decent whores I could get for that...

Alinea is a once every 3-5 year indulgence for me. There are lots of places here which I like as much or more for a regular meal and are a fraction of the price. Alinea is just an all around amazing experience and one that I like to have from time to time.

tonights dinner - corn on the cob and rosemary potatoes from the farmers market on the town square, fresh tomatoes from the garden and chicken grilled on mesquite wood.

good stuff.
