Serious question for everyone out there. I get that no one will ever feel sorry for Phil or Tigers tax due - but what is everyones top % than anyone should have to pay?? No right or wrong answer obviously.

Just federal tax rate - ignore all the state, sales ,property etc we have to pay.

My number is 25% - any more than that is thievery in my book.

I DO think Phil is overtaxed. I think most people are overtaxed.

But I also think that it's hard to pick an ideal maximum tax rate for the super rich because, even though they have the highest tax rates on paper, they also have special access to tax lawyers and other exotic legal means to drastically lower the taxes they actually pay. And those exotic legal means are things that few average people have access to. As a result, most wealthy people wind up paying lower tax rates than their barber does. I seem to remember that Mitt Romney paid something like 18% in taxes. That's why my sympathy for them is somewhat limited.

I'm sure Phil has a legal/accountancy team that makes sure he doesn't pay NEARLY the taxes he theoretically owes from his winnings in Scotland.

Anything over 30% is pure and simple punishment/populism.

Romney was at 14% but that was only because he didn't take all the deductions that he normally did. Those still can be taken which if he does this year, with the same income, he would only pay 11%

Except Forbes would keep many of the deductions as well which would mean that the wealthy would pay virtually no taxes

No wonder Republicans love his plan so much.

Missouri Republicans are close to overriding the Governor's veto on a gun bill which would make it a crime for any federal agents to enforce federal gun laws within the state of Missouri. Would also make it a crime to publish any information about gun owners (who have a right to complete secrecy, after all). Meaning reporters who reveal the names of owners could be jailed for a year. This is how Missouri respects freedom of the press.

It's a wildly unconstitutional law, but the gun lobby doesn't give a shit. Nearly everyone is going to vote for the damn thing, including the Dems, because they are all too frightened to appear to be "anti-gun" and get booted out of office.

"We love our guns and we love hunting. It's not worth the fight for me to vote against it," said Rep. T.J. McKenna, D-Festus. But, he added, "the bill is completely unconstitutional, so the courts are going to have to throw it out

"Being a rural-area Democrat, if you don't vote for any gun bill, it will kill you," Harris said. "That's what the Republicans want you to do is vote against it, because if you vote against it, they'll send one mailer every week just blasting you about guns, and you'll lose" re-election.

In 1996, (could have been 1992), Jerry Brown had a tax simplification plan that would allow virtually everyone to file their taxes on a card. It eliminated most deductions, was a graduated tax plan however. He was mostly ignored.

Clearly unconstitutional and they know it. So why support a waste of time? For the masses. That makes it a meaningless vote in terms of effect, but an easy vote to curry votes.
