Conservative counties in the bumfuck parts of the state want to secede, form new state. Typical conservative reaction to being out-voted: take your ball and go home

The jobs report shows that the economy added 175,000 jobs in May and the unemployment rate rose a bit to 7.6%.

Economist Maria Ramirez tells The Daily Ticker: "The reality is that labor market is not as healthy as what the unemployment rate tells you. Most importantly, it's the younger generation that is worst off because they have the hardest time getting a job and they have the lowest participation rate. So many are continuing to go to school and building up debt to finance it." Others are weighing in too..
I remember when the market's reaction to economic news used to be the measure of whether of how good the economy was doing. Not anymore. Market goes down, then it shows how awful the Obama economy is. Market has a great day (like today) then it still shows how awful the Obama economy is. If unemployment went down, well, you can't rust any information spewed by the Obama administration. They're lying. If it goes up, well, I told you so. The Obama economy is awful.

The stock market use to be an indication of how many American workers had a good job because healthy American companies employed American workers, and American worker that were doing well invested in the stock market. Today many of America's strongest companies aren't employing American workers and the vast majority of stock trading today is done by speculators not investors so imo there is a very real disconnect between the health of the stock market and the health of the American economy. Has nothing to do with Obama.

In fact, it was bad news that caused the market to spike up today. Bad news means fed will continue QE, which means lower interest rates, which means stock market is a more attractive investment. There were rumors that the fed could end QE by the end of the summer. That's what was sending stock market down the last few years.

DSL,

The article you linked detailed republicans who also said that it was a crazy idea. Also, do you remember a few years back when a couple of prominent democrats advocated secession because Kerry list and Bush won? And that's the nation as a whole, not just chipping off from a larger state and everyone stay in the Union.

Two thoughts strike me with regard to the Colorado issue: (1) obvious power grab by people who think they would be leaders of their new state and (2) though it will never happen, the needs, leanings, and opinions of the urban Coloradans is pretty different than that of the rural areas. So, while I see the logic, the precedent would be dangerous.

The needs and opinions of city-dwellers has been different from folks out in the boondocks for well nigh 200 years now.

But yeah, I recall many celebrities vowing self-deportation should Bush be reelected in 2004. Not sure I remember as much secession talk, with certain states rounding up 30,000-40,000 signatures.

I don't get the outrage over all this phone record, internet spying stuff. First off they say they are not spying on US citizens which I don't believe. They've been doing it since they thought commies were taking over in 54 if not before then. If ya ain't doing anything wrong, what's the problem?

DSL,

It was more than celebrities. Among others, in 2004, an aid to Senator Moynihan-turned talk show host, Lawrence O'Donnell, and the deputy assistant secretary of state in the Carter administration, Bob Beckel, were fairly active in their succession talk. I don't know if they got petitions or not.

With states, it hasn't been 'just conservatives'. For example, there was a 'progressive' group who had petition drives and worked to divide Arizona when Jan Brewer was elected.

There is a largely democratic movement in south Florida that wants to split the southern part of the state off from the more conservative north.

I'm sure there are other examples.

Any governmental assurance that they aren't spying on US citizens, and aren't spying on anyone the US, are as believable as similar assurances that Benghazi was caused by a YouTube video and the IRS harassment of Tea Partiers was limited to a few rogue bureaucrats in Cincy.

You know, I had a group of friends that I hung out with for a few years after college graduation. On the weekends after a hard week of work, we'd go out together and get dinner. And they would always take a "vote" as to where to go and I was always "out-voted." But I went anyway.

Then one weekend, we were getting ready to go out and get dinner and while taking a vote, I knew I would be outvoted but I said... fuck it... give it a shot.

(me) "Guys this isn't working for me."

(everyone else) "Huh?"

(me) "We get dinner every weekend, and its is never where I want to go."

(everyone else) "You are outvoted, that is the way it goes."

(me) "No its not the way it goes. I propose we take turns."

(everyone else) "Huh? What is that?"

(me) "This week, we go where I want to go. Next week, we go where you want to go. The week after we go where he wants to go. The week after that we go where he wants to go."

(everyone else) "No that is not going to work. We don't like going where you want to go."

(me) "What makes you think that I like going where you guys want to go?"

(everyone else) "You never said anything?"

(me) "I am now. So what are we going to do about that?"

(silence)

(everyone else) "Its too bad man, we take votes and that is the way it is. Pure Democracy. And you are outvoted."

(me) "Nope. You are all being unreasonable. I always go where everyone else wants to go, never what I want to do. So now I'm leaving. I'll find new friends who are mature enough to take turns."

(everyone esle) "There's the door. Don't let it hit you on the way out."

...(a week goes by)....

(one of the everyone else gives me a call) "Are you coming over tonight? This is no fun."

(me) "I don't know. Where is everyone going to dinner?"

(everyone else) "You know the rules."

(me) "Well, you have your answer."

(another week goes by, someone else of the everyone else gives me a call) "Dude, just come over."

(me) "Is anything changing?"

(someone else of the everyone else) "Dude, this sucks. You not being here, it sucks."

(me) "Why I'm nothing special."

(someone else of the everyone else) "Yes you are. You have the car. You always volunteer to drive. And when you drive you don't drink. So the last two weeks have totally sucked for us because none of us want to drive because we are too cheap to spend our own gas and none of us want to be the designated driver because we are too selfish to not drink and let everyone else drink."

(me) "Sounds like you have a serious problem."

(someone else of the everyone else) "No we don't. You fix the problem. So come on over so we can go out and get dinner."

(me) "Are we going where I want to go?"

(someone else of the everyone else) "Do we have to?"

(me) "Yup."

(someone else of the everyone else) "Well... you are killing us you know. You are NOT being a good friend to blackmail us like that."

(me) "Guess the answer is still no. Okay I have to go, I have other plans."

(a couple days later, someone else of the everyone else) "Okay we'll do it your way, we'll take turns from now on. Can we count on you for this weekend?"

(me) "That depends, is this weekend my turn or someone else's turn?"

(someone else of the everyone else hangs up the phone)

(that weekend, everyone else calls) "Just get the fuck over here!"

(me) "No, you guys come here."

(everyone else) "WHAT!?!?!"

(me) "You heard me. I have new friends now and they are all coming over here tonight and then we are going where I want to go."

(everyone else) "FUCK YOU!!!!!" (hangs up the phone)

Dr Strangelove, this is basically politics in these United States. Sometimes (quite often) the majority is wrong. It was wrong in early November of 2008. And it was DEATHLY WRONG in early November 2012. It was so wrong, I want to take the right to vote away from women and anyone under the age of 26. These two groups have proven to me that they are not fuctionally capable of making intelligent decisions that directly affect the life and liberty of the rest of us. Since that is not happening, and people want to leave, then (well) maybe we should just let them go?

I can't decide which line in that story was more hilarious between "Dude, this sucks. You not being here, it sucks" or "You heard me. I have new friends now and they are all coming over here tonight and then we are going where I want to go."

Stick to more quasi fact based made up stories like how you bought houses and started businesses. You're terrible at creating believable human interactions.
