the headline on drudge is misleading ( I know a shock) - after reading the article, only one bar was serving rubbing alcohol. The rest were guilty of watering down the liquor

but this does support the idea that most people can't tell good vodka from the bad in mixed drinks

Watering down a drink is bad. I've had that happen in Alabama. Ordered a bourbon rocks. Bartender poured about 20ml in a glass and spritzed about 30ml of water on top of it and the ice. She did it covertly, but I saw her and called her on it. She just smiled and said, "Okay, I won't charge you for this one." I said, "Fine." Got up and left without touching it.

I've often suspected that some people were refilling premium bottles with discount booze. I was in a bar in Phoenix and ordered Glenfiddich 18. What I got tasted like Dewar's. To a non-Scotch drinker, there may not be a big difference. To me it was huge. The barkeep told me that the "desert air" affects people's tastes. I switched to bottled beer, which tasted fine. Yeah, he got no tip.

That's exactly why I just drink beer at bars. You know what you're getting with a bottle of beer. No telling what you're getting with a mixed drink.
