Star Trek:

[spoiler=]Benedict Cumberbatch is NOT Khan. He's a very good actor, but he's still a pasty, skinny, white English actor and cannot effectively take the place of Ricardo Montalban.

Hated the flip with Kirk "dying" of radiation from putting the warp coil back on then being brought back to life (like Spock did in the earlier movies). That was a lazy theft. Also, Khan was too much. He was a genetically enhanced human from the 20th century, fine - so he would be way smarter than average humans and stronger. But that doesn't mean that he hand-to-hand destroys a troop of Klingons single-handily, or that Kirk grows tired of hitting him and Khan doesn't even get a bruise, or that it takes Spock hitting him and Uhurha blasting him with a phaser repeatedly to take him down. And his blood brings people (and tribbles) back to life and cures cancer? No....

Then a few of the physics' issues (for examples the falling debris when they lost life support in orbit and were falling toward the surface. Stuff kinda "floats" in those situations. See: Vomit Comet).


There were a few other issues, like a portable transporter that can transport Cummerbund from Earth all the way across 6 galaxies to the Klingon home world of Chronos, but they can't beam Spock out of the volcano
when 200 yards away. Also, why couldn't Spock beam the device down to render the volcano inert? No remote detonation? C'mon. I'm leaving a ton of other problems and issues out, but you get the idea.

Despite the above, I enjoyed it, but it could have been much better.[/spoiler]

I haven't seen Star Trek yet, nor read your spoilers, but I think some of the angst Ive heard about it come from the fact that Abrams is making action movies and not traditional science fiction. Traditional Star Trek was good when it was very dull, slow, and intellectual, and action kinda gives some fans what they're not expecting. Its part of the reason why the movies with the TNG cast were so fucking awful, they made action movies with a cast built to carry a slow, sci-fi TV show.

the movie is good because of the charactars and interaction between them. the action can be a little over the top as you would expect.

I loved the first Star Trek. I've watched many of the original Star Trek episodes at various stages of my life and I can appreciate the effort in tying the crew and storylines from the original together. My problem with the original star trek and even moreso with TNG was their reliance on gimmicks - like the OK corral episode, or teaming Kirk up with Lincoln and fighting Ghengis Khan - and with TNG, it seemed like every other episode had that stupid ass holodeck in it to recreate something other than science fiction. To me, that's the writers taking the week off. A friend of my wife's is a Star Trek enthusiast and she refuses to watch the new movies as its an insult to the original show in her eyes. I just want to be entertained.

A movie I really liked that I keep watching is the latest Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey, Jr. I think it was better than the first one.

Never understood Star Trek, Star Wars or any future movies. Never watched any of them. TV or Movie. Never had an interest in fake shit that will never happen in my lifetime. The only person I know that would even consider having sex with a wookie would be Hedge & that's probably only after his MIF leaves him for the guy selling better corn seed.

I couldn't stand the first star trek reboot

it's one thing to have Kirk as a rogue captain who bangs green chicks & plays loose with the prime directive while commanding a ship in interstellar space

but it's just lame & insulting for him to be the exact same way at starfleet academy, as a military cadet who basically insubordinates his way to the rank of captain

just up in the military breaking every rule, gomer pyle only wishes he had it like that

The wife refused to see it. She already was markedly upset (as was I) that in any conceivable military that an ensign would get the commander position in the flagship of the military. That's from the movie 3 years ago, so it's not a spoiler. But then she saw the director J.J. Abrams on the Daily Show say that he had never liked Star Trek (he later said that he likes it now) so he made a movie that all people would like.

[spoiler=]Agree, no way it can be Khan. Not only that, the distance between the edge of Klingon space to their home world is extremely short and the distance back to earth even shorter. Very small Alpha quadrant solar system. I still don't get he SpockUhura relationship. Still, was entertained by the movie, but my wife was smart not to go. Best recasting, the guy as Bones.[/spoiler]
