I always thought he was more ok with guns than his wife and that he was going for the ride on the rhetoric because he loves his wife. I bet she has no idea of the full extent of his gun collection and that she is surprised by the purchase.
clearly his logic was to buy one before they became illegal - the same reason thousands of gun owners across the nation are doing it , then he got busted for it and tried to make it some act to show how easy it was for him to purchase one. Except he is part of the reason they are paying $1800 for it now instead of $700. I'm not saying he profited from it - I'm just saying he knew he was going to lead a charge to make them hard to come by.
