As long as there is a check, but the records aren't maintained in a database, it's cool.

Ho do you check records if they aren't maintained in a database?

I'm talking making a background check but not logging the weapon purchased in any kind of database.

you really believe they aren't maintaining those records?

Why even have the guy write it down then?

They probably are. It could be fixed so that they aren't, though, couldn't it?

there is just no way the federal government is going to get information like that and not database it.

They register cars. Plus, most of you are registered for a potential draft. You can bring your own weapons.

Not my point. But registering gun sales is okay, as far as I am concerned. That's because I am not supportive of a bunch of people who think they can or should or will need to take up arms against the govt. Too close to the militia movement which is populated in part with __________ (insert own pejorative).

If the govt wanted to know who the gun owners are, they could get their with 90% accuracy today. I guess I don't understand why anyone is that caught up in making sure the government THEORETICALLY doesn't know if you own, or what you own.

Instead of railing against databases, you should've taken up protests decades ago with credit cards, or at least debit cards.

Was talking with a guy yesterday who recently went to a gun show around here to sell one of his handguns. Some guy approached him just as he got out of his car asking if he was selling. He sold it on the spot for what he was asking. Cash. No paperwork. No checks & the buyer wasn't a dealer.

The guy who sold it reminds me of e a little bit though. He got all hot & bothered when I asked what he needed an ak for & he went on about the day the feds come he wants to be ready. I laughed and told him he should be looking to secure a tank then if he wants to be ready.

A tank just makes it easier to hit with a drone. What he needs is a tunnel and to live underground.

that is the classic gun show loophole - an individual can buy a gun from another individual and no paperwork is filled out.

But its very politically incorrect to hold large gunshows in urban crime centers. While I can't say for sure, I don't think you're going to see a gun show at a Chicago expo hall. And the idea a felon is going to drive 120 miles or more in the off chance he can purchase a handgun at a gunshow seems a bit out there to me.

I know the logic behind registration. If all guns are registered then when a gun is used in a crime, you can trace back the guy that sold it to the felon...and then he'll just say it was stolen from him.

The bottom line is registration gives the government a list of legal gun owners. Someone tell me what registering guns did to prevent the shootings in Newtown, Aurora, Tuscon and Virginia Tech.

here is the issue with that mentality - the guy you're talking about isn't a threat against you, Spacer, anyone else or even the government - as long as the Feds don't come - which is what you guys believe. The guy will just keep hoarding his can of beans, stocking batteries and wearing camo to militia man events. They aren't actively working toward the overthrow of the government. What they are working toward is to be left alone. They pose zero threat to society - yet they continue to be the focus of your rationalization for what is wrong with gun purchasing in this country. He isn't going to sell that AK to a felon (as we have already noted, the mass shootings were all done with people purchasing guns legally) - he is hanging on to that gun with a belief that it may save his life one day, or at least him owning it will deter someone from going after him.

as long we have a government that believes it has to take up arms in against its citizens then we need the balance - and we do need people willing to take up arms against our government.

Power corrupts, and whether you are an Indian at Wounded Knee or a Branch Davidian at Waco, the government will continue to show its citizens that it has little regard for anyone they see that stands in its way. We can't count on the police or military to ask whether what they are doing in the name of our government is moral or just.
