I think all school nurses should carry.

I'm not a fan of teachers or school nurses carrying. A guard? I dunno. Probably not a bad idea, and some school's already have them. It does cost money and reduce the budget for education, though. It may not be the answer for all schools, though.

I don't get this argument about public figures and heads of state with security as a hypocritical position, if they are for gun control.

It basically goes like this:

You feel threatened and you perceive a danger, a potential for a crazy person or criminal to harm you or yours, so you get burly men with guns to guard you.

I feel threatened and perceive a danger, a potential for a crazy person or criminal to harm me or mine, hiring armed guards is unrealistic.

So, afford me the right to protect myself and my loved ones with a weapon similar to the one many of your armed guards carry.

Now, does Rosey O'Donnell (and other public figures) and President Obama (and other heads of state), have a higher potential to face a crazy? Yes.

Does that mean that my concern is imagined? No.

so if this payroll tax cut that just expired was begun in the 2010 by Obama as part of the stimulus package, I guess it had the desired effect since nearly everyone I've talked to this week said they were going to have to cut back now they have 2% less pay.

The question is, do we have enough cranking in other areas to offset that capital that is pulled out of the economy?

=================================

I still don't think that using an argument that someone for gun control (which isn't the same as banning guns) who has armed security is a hypocrite. Seems like reductionism, to me. I guess it's because it's so obvious to me why a President (or his kids) would have an armed guard, it makes me tune out the argument when it goes down that path of logic. Oh yeah, soldiers have bazookas (which really is one of the silliest words, for such a deadly object...I can't say it 5 times in a row without cracking a smile) and I don't think it's a valid argument that everyone should have them then.

Well, Bklyn, there are shades of gray on both sides. You asked a general question and I gave a general answer. If you are asking specifically about BHO, I do not necessarily see Obama as a hypocrite because of his proposed limitations and his use of armed guards for his own protection.

"Gun control" is broad. You can 'control' it all the way to a de facto ban. Not sure where you're going with a soldier having a bazooka and anti-gun public figures hiring men with guns, though.

I wasn't going anywhere with it, I guess. I was just or attempting to illustrate an extreme form of reductionism in the context of the gun argument, just like that photo...but I didn't stick the landing.

Yeah, I was speaking specifically about BHO...or, even more specifically, about the picture aTm posted.

Joe Scarborough is an alumnus of the University of Alabama. Him, and Rece Davis are two of my favorite UA alums on TV.

The ad crosses a line, I think.

yeah, Scarborough is a sensible dude. I like him a lot and I think that co-host of his has a look like she may be able to work some freaky shit on a dude...but I digress.

I am a gun advocate, for the most part. I grew up around them. I'm the youngest son of a man raised on a farm in southwest Georgia, who has hunted and fished without thinking anything wrong with it. With all of that, I don't suffer extremists well in anything. Extreme Left. Extreme Right. Extreme Religiosity (sp?). Extreme intolerance. It all makes me think there is a character defect beyond the word that is attached to the "Extreme."

People who are balls out and bat shit crazy about no conversation on gun control and gun laws, to the point they want to walk down a city street with loaded assault rifles dangling from their shoulders, or making ads that needlessly pull children and their safety into the conversation or make wild and loud statements about revolution...make me beyond skeptical and I don't hear their points anymore. I don't suffer fools well and these people give enough hints of fool that I don't want to stay around for confirmation.

I just think we do have a problem in this country with violence and guns. I do think that something needs to be done about many of the weapons we have available in this country. I think there is a solution, no matter how many times we've failed in the past. I don't get those who refuse to entertain the dialogue.

I agree with a lot of what you say, I just think that our first instinct with guns is to blame the guns when they are nothing more than a tool.

Take Aurora:

The dude was crazy. People want to blame the guns, though. Or video games. Or movies.

The NRA is getting some bad advice

Same problem that Romney had - they are playing to their base and that isn't who needs convincing

Christie weighs in on the NRA ad. Calls it "reprehensible":

I think Obama's executive orders basically amount to a failure on a guns agenda.

The clips and assault rifles will have to go to congress and its not going to pass, much less see light of day.

The other EO's are being overblown as some great reach of power when really most of them are just shoring up holes that have dropped in regards to compliance and common sense.

However, I'm totally against stopping the gunshow loophole and its because I don't think the government needs to know what type of gun I own.

If someone can tell me why as a law abiding citizen they should, I'd be willing to listen.
