One of the very first things members of the Ku Klux Klan are told to do upon indoctrination, is to vote Democrat. It was Klan members who first got the idea that the best way to protect themselves from the Negroes who might shoot back, is to create laws and regulations to disarm them. And disarming the public is one of the fundamental building blcoks of the Democratic Party. Thus, the Democrats were (by their very nature) the greatest allies the Klan had.

I'm fine with laws that help restrict crazies from getting guns. That approach won't always work, though. For example, the shooter at Newtown was already legally mentally ill, and would have been denied purchase of guns under the proposed new law. So he just stole the guns from his mother. Likewise, if a future mass murderer can't get guns because he is certified crazy, he will just steal them.

The "assault weapons ban" proposal is as silly and stupid as it was when it was first enacted under the Brady bill. The law described an "assault weapon" purely on how it looked, not how it functioned. Whether or not it has a pistol grip or a bayonet notch or other legal nitwittery that legally defined an assault rifle makes no difference in a mass shooting. If a rifle is semiautomatic, THAT's what makes it more lethal. But to ban semiautomatics would ban nearly every hunting rifle in America. Good luck with that.

I'm okay with restrictions on magazine capacity, but they won't make much of a difference either. Instead of bringing fewer high capacity magazines, a shooter will just bring more low capacity magazines. Does anybody really think a homicidal nutjob will say to himself, "I was going to commit mass murder today, but it's just too hard carrying some extra magazines around. I guess I won't after all."

Like all attempts at gun control, Obama's proposals will do nothing to stop mass shootings. It will merely help liberals feel good about themselves.
