I'm for healthcare reform... for affordable healthcare & for universal healthcare. As your article states: 'Although America leads the world in spending on health care, it is the only wealthly, industrialized nation that does not ensure that all citizens have coverage.' If we have to get insurance companies out of the healthcare business in order to achieve parity with other industrialized nations, that's fine with me.bluetick wrote:Heh. You'e not against insurance...yet you want insurance out of the healthcare biz.

We don't need parity with other country's quality of healthcare - ours is the best. We just need for everyone to be in on it.Dora wrote:If we have to get insurance companies out of the healthcare business in order to achieve parity with other industrialized nations, that's fine with me.
Btw, your mate can buy short-term medical insurance for a song. If he's in his 40s, it might run him $70-80 a month; a little over a hundred if he's in his 50's. No co-pay, a high deductible, no pre-existing - but excellent coverage in the event of a catastrophe. He can do BC/BS for up to a year and then switch to another STM plan with somebody esle (Assurant maybe), do another year, and switch back. Being up on that highwire so long without a net....eventually wears you down.

And we need to make it more affrordable. There is no reason we should have to pay more than anyone else.We don't need parity with other country's quality of healthcare - ours is the best. We just need for everyone to be in on it.

That may be true, but only as long as you don't expect more than anyone else (See: facilities, waitlists with the NHS in the UK). But we're kinda spoiled in America.

AA, I'm finishing a book I think you'd go for. Tommy's Honor: The Story of Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris, Golf's Founding Father and Son by Kevin Cook. Better than Golf in the Kingdom imo.

LMBOMA, anyone foolish enough to fall for the 45 million "uninsured Americans" isn't to be trusted so I looked into this site. It's all "consensus", not really hard data, or at least their data is very hard to find if it's there. They quote the 45 million, which isn't even remotely the truth.bluetick wrote:http://www.iom.edu/Reports/2009/America ... -Care.aspx

Lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United States. Although America leads the world in spending on health care, it is the only wealthly, industrialized nation that does not ensure that all citizens have coverage.
The committee proposes a clear and compelling overall recommendation that by 2010 everyone in the United States should have health insurance and urges the president and Congress to act immediately by establishing a firm and explicit plan to reach this goal. The committee envisions an approach that will promote better overall health for individuals, families, communities, and the nation by providing financial access for everyone to necessary, appropriate, and effective health services.
But the best thing is their leap in logic and conclusions. They forget things can be true, true and unrelated. So they say "studies show that uninsured patients are diagnosed later with colon and breast cancer". Well that statement is likely true, but is it related to insurance or is it related to the life decisions they made besides the decision/circumstance of insurance (some decide not to have it, some can't get it etc). Didn't see that addressed anywhere.
"People without insurance are more likely to be trauma patients than people with insurance". While that may be a true statement, doesn't mean the lack of insurance caused their trauma.

How many of that 45 million CHOOSE not to be insured? I work with MANY people who can afford an HD motorcycle, drive a much nicer and newer truck than mine, and go to the bars at least once a week (usually payday), yet choose not to purchase either group or private insurance.
Worth. Every. Cent.

lack of insurance causes 18000 deaths I wonder what having really good insurance does?
overtesting and overtreating have been know to put some people at risk
I've seen surgeries and chemo treatment both used in questionable situations because the "specialist" thinks the best way to treat something is his/her particular speciality and oh by the way the patient has a plan that covers

2nd hand smoke is the real killer of the uninsured.
