Recognize realities. The Baby Boomers (and their kids) aren't going to let you decrease medicare. Medicaid is actually run cheaper than private practice. So, what you do is pan accordingly. Take everyone born after or on Jan 1, 1965 and raise their eligibility age to 66. Before Jan 1, 1970 raise it to 67. Before Jan 1, 1975, change it to 68. Before Jan 1, 1980 to 69. And before Jan 1, 1985, change it to 70. Also, change the retirement tax benefit from 59 1/2 with yearly increases to 64 1/2, adding 1 year per year for each person on the same schedule. Put military budget on a marked cut and I no prolonged military engagement without a tax increase to pay for it. The one thing that shouldn't be cut is govt funding for research and development. It should increase as a matter of fact. Also, either means test social security or stop the cap on social security taxes.

Just a start.

people are too healthy at 65 anyways. They should just raise it to 70 as soon as humanly possible. Most people who aren't digging ditches for a living are going to be productive until they are 70

Baby boomers AND their children aren't going to let that happen. Plus, my proposals would necessitate a change in retirement plans and pensions, something that is more difficult for those facing retirement in the next 10 to 15 years. I would also markedly decrease payroll taxes for those over 60, making it easier for jobs to keep older people on (and thus on employee insurance).

spending almost 2 trillion on war in the last decade can't help.

Yes, I know. You've posted this plan before with no idea of how much this effects the deficit. The fact that the first cost cutting measure does not occur for 20 years tells me that it is a little bit too "long term".

My previous post is proven correct. The only cuts you liberals are willing to do is on defense. It is funny how that reduction in all other gov't spending hurts the economy, but cutting defense does not. Amazing. This is why it's best to just let the cliff happen. You guys are not serious about deficit reduction and I pray there is enough cajones in Republicans to be willing to stand up to it, but I have my doubts. Just remember, in Europe, it ain't the rich who are suffering through their crisis.

The sad thing is, cutting the military will hurt the economy, just like cutting any other major federal program will hurt the economy. Half of the people in the military couldn't get a job in the real world, certainly not a job that pays them to push paper in any of thousands of bases and offices all over the globe for 25 years and then provides them with pensions and full retirement benefits for the rest of their lives when they retire at age 45. Ah, the benefits of being a "hero"...

It is now so built into the markets that there is an employer and money-doler-outer of record (the federal government) that when that spring dries up (or is impeded at all), there will be economic effects. But our only alternative is to just continue on as we have for the past 70+ years and see what happens, or else draw a line in the sand and say "No, this is not the proper role of the federal government." Somehow I don't think the people who derive their power, fame and self-esteem from being able to collect and spend federal monies are going to give it up...

not without a fight

Michigan became a right to work state today. That is pretty amazing to me.

Bullshit. I have a whole host of longterm measures and your response, the only thing I'm cutting is the military. As for being a liberal? That depends on the issue. Some of you guys would rather label than to actually listen to what is being said. As for only cutting the military? No sardis, I'm making changes all over, I'm just not going to put us in a recession/depression because of the inability to think and plan longterm. But if you want to cut medicare now, put it on the table, SPECIFICALLY. What are you going to cut now. Even the House Republicans are scared of that. Why? Because they know they won't get it through. Instead they want to go after the medicaid, which is one of the better run programs. Makes no sense.

I've put up my plan sardis. Your turn. Put up.

hmm..While I can see why the guy is upset, to compare it to an accountant stealing your money is a bit much.

That's the risk you run going to counseling. You assume the counselor is going to want you to stay together, but he/she may just say "that guy is an ass, you should get divorced"

why do conservatives just want to cut gov't spending and taxes? why are they never for cutting prices? I spend much more money paying for shit that's way overpriced so the people who run those companies get richer and richer and pay their employees less and less. why is that not a problem for some people?

Yeah, I don't like paying high taxes or seeing that money being used frivolously but I really don't like paying $3.75/gal for gas that could easily cost $2/gal. Or $50 for a pair of fucking canvas low-top Chuck Taylors that cost less than half that not even 15 years ago.

Seriously where's the outrage at the market that's gone so top heavy the average working man can barely afford anything? talk about hurting the economy, what's going to happen when most people can't afford to buy these overpriced products?

true capitalism is the only way you're going to get cheaper prices but that is coupled with a whole host of problems that forces the government to get involved - unfair labor practices, pollution, taxes, monopolies, public safety.....

You're paying $3.75 a gallon because of a combination of taxes, EPA, unregulated speculators on a commodity, lobbyists representing oil companies and Environmentalists, and unstable conditions - much of which we caused in the middle east.

The United States in on the verge of a oil /natural gas boom where we'll significantly reduce the amount of oil we import overseas. Primarily oil production will come from North America - Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. But its not going to happen unless the existing oil giants get their cut.

"The United States in on the verge of a oil /natural gas boom where we'll significantly reduce the amount of oil we import overseas."

But the price isn't going to go down because of that. Everybody is clamoring to "end dependence on middle eastern oil", but they're just going to be putting money into JR Ewing's pocket instead of Sheik Mohammad or whoever. What difference does it make? You think JR Ewing gives a shit about the average gas buyer? Hell naw....
