UNC SID's Letter to N&O
We want educational quality for student-athletes
Your Nov. 18 front-page article “UNC tolerated cheating, insider says” questioned the integrity of the University of North Carolina’s academic support program for student-athletes. This charge was unfair to the counselors who are professional and genuinely care about the quality of education that student-athletes receive. And it was especially unfair to student-athletes who come to Carolina to get an education and play a sport.
You ignored important information that the university provided and instead focused on the account of one person. For example, the story claimed that men’s basketball players took courses that a UNC review determined to be irregular until Jennifer Townsend, who became the team’s counselor in fall 2009, stopped enrolling players because she was appalled by those classes. Townsend did not make that statement about any classes offered to student-athletes.
Basketball enrollments in African and Afro-American Studies decreased after 2009 because the number of players majoring in AFAM had decreased. The last men’s basketball player to major in AFAM graduated in 2009. Players continued to take some classes in AFAM as electives or to satisfy requirements of the College, but not to satisfy the requirements of a major. Thus, the decrease in enrollments.
Former Gov. Jim Martin and Baker Tilly, an accounting and auditing firm, are currently reviewing the academic issues, including those referenced in the article. We look forward to that report.
The UNC administration has taken steps to identify and correct any problems that have been identified. Multiple reviews and audits have undertaken to examine department oversight, class enrollment, instructor workload, academic support protocols and grading processes. And dozens of reforms and new policies have been implemented across the university in both academics and athletics.
Finally, your readers should know that Mary Willingham [a university reading specialist who formerly worked with student-athletes, and who was interviewed for the article] was interviewed in the fall of 2010 as part of the joint NCAA/university review of the football program, so the NCAA is well aware of the statements she made at that time.

The length limit was waived to permit a fuller response to the article, which stated this with respect to the views of Jennifer Townsend: “Members of the men’s basketball team took no-show classes until the fall of 2009, when the team was assigned a new academic counselor. The new counselor was appalled to learn of the classes, and wanted no part of them.”

well no fucking shit sherlock. now why did the starters on your basketball team go from 100% afam majors to none? what are their majors now, and can we see some of their schoolwork to determine whether they're capable of doing college level work or not?

100%? Really? Link?
"what are their majors now, and can we see some of their schoolwork to determine whether they're capable of doing college level work or not?"
You would have to be competent yourself to make such a judgement, and I have serious doubts that such competency exists in your case...

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
Bama went to 5-0 tonight with an ass-ugly win over a godawful Charleston Southern team. We won by 13, but it was closer than that for most of the game. Our offense is just bad. The great D/Bad O team is getting old.

I don't think Sean Woods should have been suspended for a game. This is the media locking in something and making a big deal out of it.
I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

dook looked pretty good last night. Pitino did not, under that coffin lighting in that arena in the Bahamas, although it made for good watching on the TV.
still, dook looks good every November and I can't see them reaching the round of 8 in the spring.

Duke puts 3 Seniors on the floor. My guess is they'll reach their ceiling as a team in December. They'll still be top 10 all season though.

Yeah, I couldn't even tell you who dook has other than the younger Curry kid, the good freshman Sulaimon and one of the Plumlees. oh yeah, Ryan Kelly, too.
then again, I don't even know who's playing for UNC right now either because I haven't seen a game yet, only 5 min. of the one they lost and Hairston missed every shot I saw him take.

UK's point guard is a big question mark. Harrow doesn't have the stamina at this point to be that hard charging floor leader we need.

I think Creighton is a hell of a lot better than 11th in the country. I got a chance to see them play for a few minutes over the long weekend. They are fucking good. I could very easily see them winning 25 regular season games.

From IC:
"Interesting tweets

#random I seriously dont know why #UNC don't play Hairston more mins? I look at the box score and he only avg 16mins w 11ppg! He's a PLAYER!
Julius Hodge @Follow24Hodge
Seriously speaking and no "art of war" going on here. Hairston is too good to be on the bench for 25mins of the game. Everyone sees that!
Julius Hodge @Follow24Hodge
P.S. PJ don't RT me neither because one of the guys you better than but getting your mins will run tell coach. believe that!"

It is easy to say, North Carolina, Duke, UConn, Kentucky, Nova, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Arizona, UCLA, Purdue, Pitt, Syracuse, and Georgetown. The usual suspects as to the perinial basketball powerhouses are the usual suspects. End of story. It is no fun to to say one of them is the team to watch because of the 300+ teams, we are all already watching all of them.
Rat, grow a pair of testicles, go out on a limb, pick a mid-major and say "....you know what, that team is GOOD!" That is fun. It is fun and interesting because it is hard to do. It is much harder (and riskier) to go out on a limb and say that a mid-major team might make some noise than it is to to follow a perinial powerhouse.
Look at Butler. Think about how much fun Butler fans (and to lesser extent, VCU fans) have had in recent years. March is a great time if you go to Butler. Think about how much fun it would have been to follow that team from the beginning of the season and to come here to the Goat Pen, gloat, and say "....I think that team is really fucking good and might win it all."
Grow some stones Rat. Challenge people to think. I can't root for BC, we just lost to Bryant, we suck. So now I have to find someone else to root for. I think Creighton is good. They have already beaten 3 of the toughest 6 opponents they have on their schedule. If they lose to the other 3 good teams (but win the rest) they go 26-3. Now, I get to have fun. I get to throw it all in your faces for the next three months if Creighton continues to win.
