Tomorrow I'm gonna wake up like I do every day. Hock a lugie in the sink at about 5:30 am and navigate my way downstairs and outside for some fresh air & a smoke. I'm gonna walk next door and bring up my neighbors paper from his driveway like I've been doing since I was a kid. I stuff it through his mail slot. I actually think he uses that as his alarm clock though because he's always up 20 minutes after I drop it. He is a Holocaust Survivor too. Has those numbers on his arm & stuff. Good man.

I liked Thanksgiving better as a kid.

It was different in a good way, that's for sure.

Good thing you're doing for the old guy. He may not have many holidays left.

First Wife wrote:Romney was the most libertarian candidate Republicans have run since Calvin Coolidge. And he got more votes from the dwindling white majority than Reagan did.

How many more votes would Romney have gotten by being a rude, condescending jerk? Sure, it worked for Obama, but he was the incumbent.

Some conservatives didn't trust Romney because, as governor of a state between blue and North Korea, he had instituted a health insurance mandate, one feature of the hated Obamacare.

As governor of a purple state, Reagan had signed the most liberal abortion law in the country and imposed the three largest state tax hikes in the nation's history. Nevada Sen. Paul Laxalt's nominating speech hailed Reagan's governorship of California for producing "a veritable Great Society of aid for schools, minorities and the handicapped," as the Times put it. Reagan had also been an actual member of the godless, treason party.

This is not to diminish Reagan. It is to say that Romney wasn't the problem.

To the extent Republicans have a problem with their candidates, it's not that they're not conservative enough. Where are today's Nelson Rockefellers, Arlen Specters or George H.W. Bushes? Happily, they have gone the way of leprosy.

Having vanquished liberal Republicans, the party's problem now runs more along the lines of moron showoffs, trying to impress tea partiers like Jenny Beth Martin by taking insane positions on rape exceptions for abortion -- as 2 million babies are killed every year from pregnancies having nothing to do with rape.

Romney lost because he was running against an incumbent, was beaten up during a long and vicious primary fight, and ran in a year with a very different electorate from 1980. At least one of those won't be true next time. But we're not going to win any elections by telling ourselves fairy tales about a candidate who lost because he wasn't conservative enough, articulate enough or mean enough.

Ann is struggling mightily to maintain her strenuous state of denial about Romney.

To her, the R base and the American voter just didn't appreciate the true greatness of this amalgam of Washington, Lincoln and Reagan. Those voters are just stupid. The last argument of losers.

It's sad to see a woman so deeply in love behold her man so roundly dissed.

And almost as charismatic and inspiring as Coolidge, too...

That kinda reminds me of a certain poster in here as well. End women's suffrage now!! LMAO. I have to say it is comforting knowing that with people like IB as their base, the repub party as it exists today is a nonstarter. Certainly a non-finisher. They will have to evolve, but you just don't get the feeling that IB and Co. are going to evolve with them, which is going to further marginalize the party. What's probably going to happen is that moderate repubs are going to start being absorbed by the Dem party and hopefully get some of their good notions enacted by changing the Dem party from within. I could see that happening. Of course, IB will not be a part of that evolution, he and his ilk will be sitting there sneering and grimacing and calling for an end to women's suffrage (etc) while the adults move on and try to get something done. Good riddance...

Not that any of the American Taliban members here would know who Carl Rowan was, but here's a gift.
Anyone found in possession of a handgun, except a legitimate officer of the law, [should go] to jail—period! Anyone committing a crime with a handgun [should go] to prison, with 10 years added to his term, without parole—period!

Carl Rowan may have cause to rue those words, which he wrote in 1981. Rowan, the nationally syndicated columnist, has long been an outspoken advocate of gun control. Then, two weeks ago, he shot and slightly wounded an intruder in his Washington, D.C., backyard. Ever since, two facts about the case have kept capital gossips—and lawyers—abuzz: The interloper was a near-naked teenager who had been skinny-dipping with friends in Rowan's pool, and the columnist's weapon was an unregistered, and thus very illegal, .22 caliber pistol. As soon as the incident hit the papers, Idaho Senator Steve Symms, an outspoken opponent of gun control, sent Rowan a $20 gift membership in the National Rifle Association and a gloating telegram proclaiming: "In America, freedom and justice have always come from the ballot box, the jury box and, when that fails, the cartridge box." Added NRA spokesman Wayne LaPierre, delighted to present a plateful of crow: "Carl's sentiments are exactly ours. We believe the honest folks in this town have a right to protect themselves
."
During a press conference later, O'Mara was asked if he had any advice for Zimmerman, and he answered, "Pay me."

CARL ROWAN! I remember his story well, but I couldn't remember the name of that liberal anti-gun columnist who shot at a couple of kids outside his house in DC. Thanks!

Another example of hypocrisy by liberals is Al Gore. He wants everybody to live like the Amish, while he owns several giant houses and flies all over the world in private planes and travels in SUV entourages. That one man has a bigger carbon footprint than Montana.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.
So you stole that from some dude who wrote a letter to a newspaper in Oklahoma in 1951. Great, you have proven that people have been whining about democracy when their candidate loses an election since at least 1951...

" In our recent piece on the fiscal cliff and slippery slope we opened with two quotes. One was wrongly attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville. Several readers called the error to our attention. The original piece is posted on Cumberland’s website, www.cumber.com .

The erroneous section reads “We shall see if Alexis de Tocqueville may be right in his quote, ‘A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury.’ ”

I guess we could have written this more accurately by saying, Often wrongly attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville, but more likely sourced to an obscure reference in 1951, this quotation applies to the current debate. “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of, it can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury.”

One writer for whom we have great respect is Barron’s editorial writer Tom Donlan. He wrote:

“Dear David, Your 2d paragraph quote from Tocqueville is true, but not accurately attributed. It’s from a 1951 letter to the editor of the Daily Oklahoman. The letter-writer (falsely) attributed the quote to Alexander Tytler. For more than you’d ever want to know about it, see http://www.lorencollins.net/tytler.html . Regards, Tom Donlan”
