Re: Ostensibly Hoops
I don't know what the point spread is for tomorrow night but I think we lose by 12. Harrow is still sick and hasn't practiced all week and even with him I don't have the confidence to think we can take Duke tonight.
I like the stinky pinky but only up to the first knuckle, I do not want a GD thumb up there--I've told her multiple times and I always catch her when she tries to pull a fast one---it's my butthole for Chrissakes I'm gonna know--so cut out the BS.

I'm sure Dave will give a big 'thumbs up' to this quote in an article in the New Yorker.......
What Calipari has done is turn his basketball program into a place that, like a law, business, dental, or other professional school, is focussed on insuring that each of its students moves on to successful, satisfying careers. In this regard, Calipari is the most honest man in the sport.

he hasn't done anything to ensure that. he's given them a place to play for a year, which unlike a law or medical degree, isn't going to enhance their already high profiles that much more.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
I dont understand why schools don't just go ahead and set up football and basketball majors. Make sure the athletes can read and write to a minimal level, can balance a checkbook, and educate them about agents, hangers on etc. Being an athlete is just as legitimate a career as engineering so why not treat it as such?
U*NC is the cleanest most honest athletic program on the planet. I am jealous of their deserved success, and I'm a mewling cunt.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
that would be fine but wouldn't those have to be 4-yr programs? or at least 2 years and certainly not one-and-dones. i just don't think it's a defensible point that Calipari, or any coach who has a blue-chip player for 1 season, has given that kid the training he needs to succeed in the NBA.

I don't think you can have a major set up that way, but there should be personal finance courses set up in the freshman curriculum, as a general elective. Then, they should just major in kinesiology or physical education and learn how to take care of their bodies in the long term. It has practical and specific benefits, athlete or not.
The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
people go to college to take music and ballet, not to mention a whole litany of academic majors that have limited salary earning potential

well no one said you had to issue a degree after a year. Make it an associate program and if they leave after a year they either come back or dont get the diploma.
I also think that this one and done system needs to go away. If an athlete has no interest in college why should he or she have to go? I'd like to see high schooler be able to go pro if they want, but if they decide to go to school then it should be a minimum three year commitment from both sides before they can go pro.

its not a college rule - and he doesn't have to go to college - he can go to Europe like Brandon Jennings did, earn $300K and improve his skills playing against people who don't bathe.
No college is going to require a 3 year commitment from a kid because it will have the opposite effect - it will drive kids to Europe and water down the basketball talent in college.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
It's an NBA rule isn't it? Much like the NFL 3 year rule. Baseball players either go straight to the minors out of high school or have to wait three years to be drafted out of college. That's the type of system I'm talking about with the caveat that if an athlete opts to attend college that the university still has a commitment to the athlete if he/'she gets injured never works out as a starter etc. Basically gives the athlete a real shot at a degree if it doesn't work out on the field.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
so far the Duke/UK game is pretty ugly.
Its 15-14 right now but I see Duke pulling away. Their white guy is better than ours.

Re: Ostensibly Hoops
We played Duke much closer than I thought - Duke got some runs on us but we were able to get back.
I feel pretty good about where we are right now.

Why would they come to burn up the boards at a politics forum?
