Owlman wrote:Planned Parenthood versus Casey (1992) is the law of the land, replacing Roe's emphasis on the trimester system. Before this case, Kennedy had expressed a desire to overturn Roe. But for this case, he created a coalition with O'Conner and Souter that was a more of a middle position.
Okay. Then Roe v. Wade, as slightly modified by Planned Parenthood v. Casey, is the law of the land. No difference.

But thank you for reminding me that O'Conner was nominated by a Republican President (Reagan), Souter was nominated by a Republican President (Bush Sr.) and Kennedy was nominated by a Republican president (Reagan). So the reality is that Roe v. Wade was SAVED by three REPUBLICAN appointed justices. Yet the myth persists (not accidentally) that a vote for an R president is a vote for back alley abortions (not to mention also a vote for a burning black churches).

As a percentage of ever-growing profits, corporatations are paying less in taxes than they have in decades.

Thanks in part to federal tax breaks, corporations paid out just 12.1 percent of their 2011 profits in taxes, according to the Congressional Budget Office. That's well below the country's top marginal corporate tax rate of 35 percent -- and as The Wall Street Journal notes, it's the lowest percentage corporations have paid since 1972.

Corporations reported a combined $1.97 trillion in profits in the third quarter of 2011. As recently as June, they were also believed to be sitting on more than $2 trillion in cash hoardings. Most of that money has not been touched by taxation, even though the federal government has experienced budget shortfalls of more than $1 trillion for each of the past four years, and is scrambling to cut back on staff and services as a result. Meanwhile, the money isn't going to employees either, as real wages for most Americans declined in 2011 in spite of strong corporate balance sheets.

PLEASE GOD, do NOT piss off the Job Creators by going back to Clinton Era tax rates. Otherwise the gravy train we've enjoyed the last few years will surely end. OH THE HUMANITY!!

Is it true that O got 99% of Cuyahoga and 100% of 59 districts in Philly? And he didn't carry a single state that requires a photo ID? That can't be right, can it?

Well, you had Mitt famously telling Diane Sawyer this summer that he would "do whatever he could" to overturn Roe v Wade. Granted, you can also find quotes of his supporting a woman's right to choose... but again that was MA Mitt, not US Mitt.

Mitt did indeed have chameleon tendencies on social issues. I think the MA Mitt has always been the real Mitt.

This SCOTUS discussion reminds me of another tendency: That liberal presidents nominate liberal justices who consistently rule liberally. By contrast, most conservative presidents nominate conservative justices who then rule liberally. O'Conner, Souter, Kennedy (and recently, Roberts with Obamacare) fall into the latter category. Thomas and Scalia are exceptions. Just once in my life, I'd like to see a liberal president a seemingly liberal justices who then rule conservatively. It always seems to be the other way around.

FTR, I am not really opposed to going back to the Clinton tax rates for the wealthy. After all, the country boomed under those rates. But it makes more sense to do so after the economy rebounds. Raising taxes on anybody in the middle of a recession is not a good idea. Plus, with the global economy, if you significantly raise taxes on the wealthy now, they'll just move their money overseas, and revenues will plummet instead of increase.
