Re: Florida State Seminoles
that might be true, but this election isn't about Romney, its about whether you are "anybody but Obama" or voting for Obama.
I doubt there are very many people that are truly excited about a Romney presidency. Of the field of GOP he just happens to be the most palatable of the bunch. No history of cheating on his wife, a relatively self made millionaire , a man of odd but strong faith, and has a history of being moderate enough to convince the fence sitters he won't go all Karl Rove on their ass if they pull the lever for him.
But I'm at a point where I believe there is only a small percentage of voters left who haven't made up their mind and its going to take a huge gaff by either candidate to move people in another direction.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
Listening to Joe Scarborough this morning, the guy is definitely conservative and he seems truly sad and even a little mad at this whole campaign Romney is running. He was saying that even if Romney destroys Obama in the debates (which he admitted was highly unlikely), just imagine the ads Obama is going to be running the last two weeks of the campaign. 30 second ads with Romney himself saying shit like "I like to fire people" and "47% of this country are deadbeats who think the government should support them". Not printed quotes, but Romney himself saying this stuff. Granted, the "I like to fire people" is out of context, but they might not even have to use that one given this last series of blunders...

"a man of odd but strong faith"
Aside from the comedic gold of that phrase, let me just say that one of the secretaries here is what I would call borderline evangelical. She doesn't preach it, but she does talk about church a fair amount, she's in some group at church called the praise team (singing group) and she obviously spends a good deal of her free time on church related activities. I was talking to her about Romney and mormonism the other day, I was like "Well, they are still christians aren't they?" and she shook her head. I was like "But they do believe in Jesus" and she was like "I don't care, they ain't christians." She wouldn't budge. Now then, I know she's not going to go out and vote for Obama based on that, but she definitely isn't fired up to vote for Romney. I'd bet she's just going to sit this one out, and Romney cannot afford for otherwise reliable repub voters like her to not show up at the polls...

There's not much to Mitt. But I'm mostly worried he'll pander to the base and those are the truly dangerous folks.

eCat wrote:I really don't think that is that big of a deal. The people voting for Romney , like the article said, don't even realize that a good % of them are the people he is talking about. They all see the person he is describing as a mother on welfare of 12 illegitmate kids with a deadbeat dad that Nancy Pelosi wants to take money from them to support.
(I think that Brooks editorial was excellent. It broke down everything I wanted to say)
I don't think that statement is damaging to the "people voting for Romney." Those are the ones that are not going anywhere, I agree. But the irony of it all, is that the people Romney is likely to offend with that tape are those who are not "people voting for Romney." They are "people who would vote for Romney." His speech to those $50Kers was saying that he needs a small margin of additional people, outside of the 47% he has no shot at reaching, to vote for him...people who are in the middle. Those independents, after watching the London shit, the Libya shit and now "MoocherGate" are FAR less likely to vote for Mitt. I expect Obama's New Hampshire lead to increase. I expect his Ohio and Pennsy lead to increase and I would also expect his Wisconsin lead to, as well.
When the Hispanic joke hits full stride, too, Romney can kiss Colorado goodbye, as well.
Romney has talked his way out of the Presidency (if he ever had real shot). It's bugging me out because he was my favorite Republican when everything started. Now, I think a slimmer, more socially graceful Chris Christie and Marco Rubio may be my new favorite GOPers.
See the next crop in 2016.

The thing repubs should really be worrying about now is that Romney doesn't screw up their congressional campaigns. The rats are already jumping off the Romney ship as fast as they can, but it might be too late...

Re: Florida State Seminoles
After hearing a good portion of that video on NPR and NBC News , it was almost as if Romney was saying he wasn't going to win the presidency....like what McCain realized when Palin started going off the reservation on him.
Where that 47% is really gonna hit Romney is when Obama reminds the country that his gazillionaire opponent had offshore accounts to avoid paying his fair share of taxes.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
I think picking Palin was a major mistake by McCain, but the thing that killed him was his ineffectual leadership when he called for a stop in campaigning. He looked confused while Obama looked cool under pressure plus he had just said that the economy was sound just before the crash. Put that on top of a poor decision in Palin just killed him and that his first debate was just bad.
My Dad is my hero still.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
he knew he had to choose someone like Palin because his team was telling him he'd lose by a landslide if he went with Romney or another mainstream GOP'er.
Romney's biggest problem is he is still trying to convince his base he is the guy. His whole campaign still revolves around shoring up his base.

Re: Florida State Seminoles
I genuinely disliked McCain but I will give him credit. He had alot of ammo to run a negative campaign against Obama and he fought it even when he knew he was losing by a wide margin.

I doubt anybody realized it at the time, but that choice of Palin legitimized the rabid fringe/know-nothing crowd that is tanking the entire party now. Not saying that I think the fiscal concerns of the tea party aren't legit, b/c they obviously are, but they're too fucking stupid to realize that they need to leave their hardcore, religious-based stances on social issues at the door. They just can't let go of the social shit that the financial and cultural elites of the republican party don't really give a shit about.
I've said it before, it's like the hippies in the 1960's bringing down the democrats. Unfairly or not, the "silent majority" began to associate the entire democratic party with the dirty, drug-taking, free love hippie crowd, at least on a national level, so that from 1968 until 1992, you had a repub in the White House 20 out of 24 years. The tea partiers are the bizarro mirror image of the hippies, except without the drugs, music, sex or fun. Both groups were/are disgruntled and malcontent, but without the sex, drugs and rock-n-roll to tide you over, you're looking at a sour ass bunch of malcontents. And that ain't pretty...

Re: Florida State Seminoles
What the tea party wants is a white president who is going to tell them he is cutting taxes and shrinking the size of government while increasing the pentagon budget and taking it to any muslim country that hates America. They don't want socialized medicine and they want medicare increased. They want a guy that talks about freedom and loving America while flying drones over American cities and arming the IRS. They don't want any liberal telling them they can't have a 32oz big gulp and they want to make sure gays can't get married. They don't want to pay welfare for mothers that keep cranking out babies and want abortion outlawed.
At one time I was excited about the idea of the tea party - until that idea became a reality.

the ironic part of that is the dissenters from the '60s (who weren't hippies really because hippies mostly were apolitical druggies) were against the Dems, who were the conservative status quo. the protests in Chicago in '68 were pretty much directed against LBJ's policies. However, the SDS and Weathermen and all that crowd got to see what it was really like to have a hawk con running the show once Nixon was elected.
the truly sad coda to all this is that Nixon was far more progressive than any Republican national leader is today. Shit, Nixon might have been even left of Obama, who really isn't very liberal at all.
