You MUST credit Texas for one thing: they take extremist nutjobism to the highest level.Owlman wrote:Damn straight. The Texas State Board of Education is, in and of itself, oxymoronic.

IN ALL SERIOUSNESS
Did Sarah Palin play a role at the GOP convention? I watched a grand total of 0 minutes of it.

Rasmussen now shows Obama leading by 5 over Romney. It's his biggest lead in their poll since March. Gallup has him up by 5 and CNN has him leading by 6.
I wouldn't guess as to the cause but it's clear that Obama has gotten much more of a bounce out of the Convention than Romney got. And that's a little surprising considering his speech was "meh" at best

If Rasmussen says Romney's in trouble, then Romney is in trouble. He's the R firewall of pollsters.

It wasn't nearly as meh as Romney's. And the convention as a whole was infinitely better than that farrago of nonsense and tepid blather the repubs trotted out the week before. This one was over before the conventions, now it's just a matter of how bad it's going to be. Obama is likely to lose a couple of states that he won in 2008 (NC and Indiana), but he still wins by a very comfortable margin. They'll be calling it for Obama well before midnight...

Assume NC, Missouri, and Indiana for Romney. Those plus his "safe" states give him 206 electoral votes.
The current toss-ups are Nevada (6), Colorado (9), Iowa (6), Wisconsin (10), New Hampshire (4), Ohio (18), Virginia (13), and Florida (29). Those last three are where the election will be decided. If Romney only wins 1 of 3 he's toast. Even with 2 of 3 he is in trouble.

If Romney loses either FL or OH, it"ll be over before the polls close in the Central Time Zone.

I'm not saying Obama is going to magically win any of those so-called toss-up states in a landslide and the networks will probably hold off on calling anything until a decent percentage of the precincts have reported. But it's definitely going to be over earlier rather than later...

Romney is currently behind in all 8 of the toss-ups I listed. Some people show Michigan as a toss-up but I don't think that's realistic enough to consider. Romney and Ryan have done enough trashing of the auto bailout to keep that one firmly with Obama.

Newly declassified docs show the US and FDR administration knew about the Katyn Forest Massacre committed by Soviet troops in 1940 (murdering over 20,00 Polish POW's in cold blood). Apparently chose to hide the info. The Russians finally admitted their guilt in 1990

If/when Romney loses, there will be a lot of conservatives jumping off buildings. We may never see IB or Hack or 10ac or Sardis again. The next day will be the genesis of a third party. It will be at least as big as the Ross Perot movement.
No talk about the Chicago teachers' strike? That's probably a bigger story around here than nationally.

Re: Puterbac News Network and Political Discussion Thread
Great article I happen to agree with:
The Culture War Is Over
http://prospect.org/article/culture-war-over
Excerpts:
The Culture War Is Over
http://prospect.org/article/culture-war-over
Excerpts:
Of course Romney's primary focus on the economy is dictated by conditions in the country, and the fact that an incumbent president struggling with unemployment over 8 percent really ought to be doomed. But it's also true that if there were potential customers for fist-shaking attacks about "God, guns, and gays," as the old Republican playbook had it, Romney would be moving much more aggressively to exploit that market. But he isn't, for one big reason: Liberals have won the culture war.
It isn't that Republicans have changed their views about any of those issues. But they don't see any advantage in pushing them.
If it's no good telling the voters that Democrats are alien because they don't hate gay people, better to say that Democrats are alien because they hate capitalism. After all, that's where the Republican ruling class' hearts were all along. Nobody really thinks that the likes of Brooks or William Kristol really care deeply about abortion and guns. No, it's economics, and in particular enhancing the wealth and privileges of the upper classes, that gets them up in the morning.
That's certainly true of Mitt Romney. Ask yourself this: What could you say for sure that Mitt Romney really believes? He's changed his position on so many things to appeal to the GOP base that not even Republicans themselves think that deep down in his heart he hates the Affordable Care Act or Roe v. Wade or cap and trade the way they do. (They've made peace with this fact. What matters to them isn't that he believes the party line, but that he'll have no choice but to stick to it. In other words: acts, not faith.) But we can all agree that if there's one thing Mitt Romney truly believes in, it's Republican economic policy. He may change his tune on abortion or gay rights, but he has never turned his back on tax cuts and deregulation, and he never will. He is a plutocrat to the bone.
But Mitt Romney seldom brings that issue up, and he'd rather not talk about abortion either. It's a little safer to be pro-God, so he'll go down to Pat Robertson's territory and defend the religiosity of our coinage. But as soon as he walks off that stage, you can be sure he'll quickly be returning to his arguments about the glory of capitalism and the unparalleled virtue of "job creators." Not only is it more likely to win him votes, it's where his heart has always been.

Why would conservatives be jumping off ledges if Oprama wins? They'll have the Senate the House and 65% of state legislatures. The unions are taking their last gasps before extinction, K-12 education is reforming away from the current public bureauracies, conservatives are winning in all areas except for the Presidency.
