Deion finally elected to College Football Hall

Former FSU star gets call in fifth year of eligibility

By David Dorsey • FORT MYERS NEWS PRESS• Published: May 18. 2011 2:00AM

In being selected to the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2012, announced Tuesday, former Florida State standout Deion Sanders expressed gratitude and bewilderment.

What took so long?

Sanders was selected by the National Football Foundation's committee in his fifth year of eligibility. Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February in his first year of eligibility, Sanders will be enshrined in that hall Aug. 6 in Canton, Ohio.

"I thank God for all my coaches whom influenced me and teachers whom cared enough to make me focus," Sanders wrote the Fort Myers News-Press in a text message. "Don't ever stop dreaming."

There were 79 candidates for this year's College Football Hall of Fame class narrowed to the 14 inductees. Miami defensive tackle Russell Maryland, Ohio State running back Eddie George, Florida wide receiver Carlos Alvarez and retired Michigan coach Lloyd Carr are among those who will join Sanders.

The foundation will honor the inductees Dec. 6 at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. They will be enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, located in South Bend, Ind., next summer.

The prolific defensive back and kick and punt returner did write this on his Twitter account: "Im thankful to all of you that congratulated me on college HOF. But tell Prime how u make Pro football HOF b4 college? #HOP they a lil tardy."

The #HOP stands for "Hold On Playa," which basically means, "You've got to be kidding me."

Sanders, 43, was a unanimous, two-time All-American selection at FSU. In 1988, he won the Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back and finished eighth in Heisman Trophy voting. That season, he led the nation in punt returns. His 100-yard interception return for a touchdown against Tulsa as a freshman in 1985 remains the longest in school history.

"In my opinion, he's the best athlete I've ever coached," retired FSU football coach Bobby Bowden said. "It isn't even close. Just athletic ability. I might have had some who were more valuable. (Quarterback) Charlie Ward might have been more valuable. (Running back) Warrick Dunn might have been more valuable. But none of them were as good of a player as Deion."

The College Football Hall of Fame snubbed Sanders in his first four years of eligibility. A committee of an undisclosed number selects the class each year, said Jonathan Hatchell, operations coordinator for the National Football Foundation.

Ron Simmons, a nose guard at FSU from 1977-80, was selected to the college hall in 2008.

"There's a lot that goes into it," Hatchell said. "We may have had another player from that same school the previous year. Or if there's a holdover, we compare and see who's the best fit."

Selection criteria includes academic standing and citizenship. Sanders never earned his college degree, and he was once arrested on misdemeanor charges.

A spokesperson for the National Football Foundation would not comment on whether those two factors delayed Sanders' selection.

Sanders, an NFL Network analyst and a youth football coach in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, will be the fifth FSU football player enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. FSU won four bowl games during Sanders' time on the team. He went on to become the No. 5 pick in the 1989 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons and an eight-time Pro Bowl selection.

Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

'Noles get strong QB commitment out of New Jersey

By Jim Lamar• Democrat associate editor • Published: June 02. 2011 2:00AM

It was a fairly quick courtship, but it produced pretty big results for the Florida State football program..

Sean Maguire, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback from Sparta, N.J., committed to the Seminoles as part of the 2012 recruiting class. Though Maguire has not yet been given a "star rating" by recruiting services Rivals.com or ESPN, he is considered a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com.

Maguire said he called FSU offensive coordinator James Coley and quarterbacks coach Dameyune Craig on Wednesday afternoon to inform them of his decision.

"I talked to them around 4 o'clock," Maguire said. "I just had a feeling that Florida State was the right place for me. I talked to my parents about it and I knew it was the right decision."

Maguire said he has "no idea" how he ended up on FSU's recruiting radar, but said that the Seminoles began recruiting him earlier this spring. He said he had a good feeling about his chances at a scholarship offer after Coley (and later Craig) flew to New Jersey to watch him practice in March.

A rising senior at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, N.J., Maguire said FSU was the first major school to offer him a scholarship.

"I had a pretty good feeling about some other schools," he said. "A lot of schools said they just wanted to see me throw. I was planning to visit Alabama this weekend, and they said they would probably offer me after they saw me throw. But Florida State was really the only school that saw me throw."

Maguire said a handful of other schools, including Wisconsin, North Carolina State and Maryland, were actively recruiting him. But he said he learned enough about FSU during a visit to Tallahassee in March to end the recruiting process early.

"I love the South," he said. "I always wanted to go south. It's a big school in a big state. I know the opportunity is there for me at Florida State."

Maguire, who plans to major in Sport Management, said his parents are both happy with his decision. His mom, a former outfielder at the University of West Texas, and father visited the FSU campus with him in March.

"They loved every bit of it," he said. "They loved the coaches. They loved how they treated us. They loved the campus. Everything was perfect. It was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

Maguire said he played baseball in high school but gave that up this past season so he could concentrate full-time on earning a football scholarship. He said he plans to return to Tallahassee later this month for an extended visit.

Maguire is the 11th commitment for FSU's 2012 recruiting class.

You were busy last night. 17 threads' last comment was by you, Bird. Get a pet or a vibrator or both.
