just caught this super ridiculous remix on a mixtape, I looked it up on Youtube not believin' it was real (cuz the mixtape lists itas an official old skool track)

based on the comments this was a legit remix that hit vinyl, weird that I missed it because I was an early Cool J scholar/archeologist before he turned .... let's say ... to the softer side of music

that said, regardless of the origin, ultimate banger right hurrrr

Oh yeah, I remember that track well. Philly had one of the best hip hop cultures outside of NY, though, in the early days. There was an AM station called WHAT (which now plays gospel, I think) that played hip hop Friday night and all day Saturday. I had stacks of tapes with an insane amount of B-Sides and rarely heard early hip hop (and back then I thought the Beasties were Spanish).

One time, Cool J spit this freestyle for his 18th bday at a party in Philly that someone recorded. WHAT used to play it all the time...6 minutes of straight spitting...no breaks, no hooks. It was insane. I had it on tape and my boy "Doc" Holliday borrowed it and never gave it back. Then, ?uesto dropped on Swift.fm, I lost my mind (literally) and I begged him for the mp3.

I still don't have it. I'm going to ask Poyser. I'll have a better chance there since he is my sister's next door neighbor.

For Owlman
99 Problems is a song by Jay-Z.1 It’s a good song. It was a big hit in 2004.2 I’m writing about it now because it’s time we added it to the canon of criminal procedure pedagogy. In one compact, teachable verse (Verse 2), the song forces us to think about traffic stops, vehicle searches, drug smuggling, probable cause, and racial profiling, and it beautifully tees up my favorite pedagogical heuristic: life lessons for cops and robbers. And as it turns out, I’m not late to the game after all: Jay-Z recently published a well-received volume of criticism and commentary that includes his own marginal notes on
Verse 2 of 99 Problems.3

When I teach the Fourth Amendment, I ask my students what the doctrines tell us about, on the one hand, how to catch bad guys and not risk suppression, and on the other, how to avoid capture or at least beat the rap if not the ride.4

I’m always happy to tell my own stories, but the song struck me as the perfect teaching tool. All the students know it, and importantly for pedagogical purposes, it gets some things right—and some things very wrong.

Hah. I don't teach criminal procedure but my colleague would probably love that.

I don't know what to make of Frank Ocean. I wasn't feeling his EP too much, but these Channel Orange album reviews are screaming that he's a genius. I guess I'll check it out.

You mean Jay wrote a nice track and let 2 other dudes kick his 1st & 2nd verse, I'm not even going to bother look it up

Rick Ross could never rhyme like that

Gold goes to Mos for best verse, go h-a-a-a-a-a-a-r-d

Silver to Black Thought for the best punchline : I'm like Martin Luther King, your like RODNEY

Bronze : sorry Em, but last time you did one of these for BET we found out ROYCE 5'9" wrote your rhyme, take the bronze & be glad you don't get Dairy Queened (you still killed it though)

I'm glad we've gotten back to where it's cool to have two drummers.
