I'm not sure I agree they were all nanny state, but...
  • Texting while Jaywalking - Stupid. Just make jaywalking the offense. Who cares if they were texting or talking to the hot woman walking the other direction?
    Saggy Pants Law - Stupid.
Muddy Cars - Really, Minnesota? Really?
Outdoor smoking - Hate this one.
    Trash cars - Also stupid.
Online gambling - That's not nanny state…that is government reacting to pressure from the Gaming Lobby.

Bklyn wrote:But the counter argument is that this is not limiting what a person chooses to consume. It is limiting the amount a person can purchase in one container.

The thing is, a person can still go to a local bodega and buy a two litre of Mountain Dew, screw open the top and go to town. A person can also go to a movie and buy two 16 oz colas and drink it up. They just can't buy a 32 oz container.

The thought is that even when a person buys two, they'll still only drink one...and be fine with that portion. It doesn't forbid someone from consuming as much as they want...they just can't do it from one large container. I don't see it as the same as San Fran killing the Happy Meal. That was a true nanny state move. This...not so much.

(I hate that I'm kinda arguing for this...because I think it's stupid. But, I think the mayor will get away with this)
Except they'll still be selling 32oz diet drinks, beers, shakes, slurpies and smoothies. The large drink isn't going away.

The law doesn't forbid someone from drinking a drink that isn't good for them in a large container, it just prevents them from drinking a variation of a cola.

So we'll see a new era of "diet drinks" that have 90% of the sugar of a regular drink, or 32oz drink cups with a sugar packet on the side labeled as a flavor enhancer for the diet drink.

We'll also see an unintended consequence of colas being replaced by these crazy ass energy drinks that are unregulated and does who knows what to the heart of an obese person.

Its just failed government

Valid arguments. I'm not all-in on your take...but I'm also not invested deeply in taking the other side of the argument. So, I'm gonna beg off.

I will say that this will get passed (the DoH is packed with his people) and we'll get to see the fallout in real time.

Speaking on the nanny state, I got a seat belt ticket last weekend, as a passenger. I always buckle up when I'm driving and usually buckle up when I'm a passenger, but for some reason I didn't this time. I obviously believe that it is an excellent idea to buckle up, but should the state be able to mandate that I do so? I seriously considered not paying the ticket as a form of libertarian protest, but then I'd just have to deal with more state tyranny insofar as you can't update your car registration if you haven't paid a ticket/fine and I believe they even levy it against your state income tax if that doesn't work. Worst of all, the fine is $161, only $25 of which is for the actual violation, the rest being "court costs". WTF? Of course I'm not even going to go to court, just mail it in, how the hell can that cost them $135 just to process that? What a racket...

Eh. Court costs are more than that for most cases. Republicans have had AOC increase fees across the board. It's a way to raise revenue without taxing. AOC is the only part of NC state government that turns a profit.

Also, if you don't pay it, it will also revoke your license, and you can get picked up for Driving While License Revoked, which is a criminal offense.

With dooksux on this seatbelt ticket, hedge will surely get 'the chair'.

I asked the cop if he'd ever heard of anyone contesting a seat belt violation. As I suspected, he said no. It doesn't go against your record and it's priced just lower than it would cost to hire a lawyer. And I think even if you win, you still have to pay court costs. As I said before: it's a racket...

You don't pay court costs if you win dumbass.

Which brings up a bitch that I have. If the prosecution wins their court case against you they make you pay for their legal expenses but if you beat them they don't have to pay yours. Sounds fair to me (if I was IB)

"This is not about China": The US to move majority of warships to Asia-Pacific

LMAO.... even when the idiots do the rare smart thing, they can't tell the truth about it.

http://www.rt.com/news/us-asia-strategy-panetta-822/

The US is set to reposition its Navy fleet with the majority of its warships to be assigned to the Asia-Pacific by 2020. But this military strategy has nothing to do with US-Chinese rivalry in the region, the defense secretary [Panetta] assures.

.

The Chinese are just as dishonest... they are #2 in military spending, but refuse to acknowledge they are modernizing.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated the expanded US military presence in Asia was based on a miscalculation of Beijing's intent to modernize its military defenses.

GeoPolitics has never been about honesty or transparency, that's for sure. Usually, honesty and transparency are ramifications of a geopolitical misstep.

Not being transparent is one thing.

Being "Baghdad Bob dishonest" is another.

Everyone knows that China's goal is to strengthen its navy so it can control its own coastal waters 200 miles out. Our goal is to prevent them from doing that.

As of now we are winning, and our next step is to secure stronger ties with the Vietnamese.

Why do we need to prevent that?
