I agree. Airlines are to blame, though. Charging to check luggage and the rigamarole of waiting for the luggage at the carousel drives people to carry on more and more.

Product of a society that demands immediate gratification. Waiting for your luggage is too much of a hassle. I don't think it's really the extra charge, people were already starting to carry on whatever they could get away with before the airlines starting charging extra.

Maybe it's because so many less people are checking bags now, but by the time I walk the distance to baggage claim, my bag is usually already there or comes out within minutes.

I do get annoyed at the clowns who carry on larger bags than the one suitcase I checked at the gate...plus another duffel bag and a laptop. I think it's patently unfair that I get charged $25 for being considerate to the other passengers by checking my bag while some asshole carries on half his closet for free.

Submitted as evidence that Republicans will criticize Obama for absolutely anything.

From the Washington Times, an op-ed complaining that Obama has not paid the proper respects to departed Beastie Boy MCA and implies he failed to do so because he's white

I agree that a lot of conservative talking heads loathe the very air that Obama breathes.

I severely dislike Obama's deficits, war on religion and war on oil. But he's doing a great job in the GWOT.

Speaking of Auburn, Prof, Businessweek had an interesting study where they attempted to calculate the Return on Investment to studying at the nation's various colleges.

You may be pleased to note that Auburn was #1 in the state of Alabama, well ahead of UAT

DSL:

You don't travel enough. Bags are often delayed. And $25 to check oHr carry on for free is a no brainer - especially if you have a connection. And we haven't even brought up the chance of them losing your list bag.

That said, whatever you carry on should be spec, though. You roll on a case larger than will fit easily in a bin and you should be fined.

I admit I don't fly more than 3-4 times a year and when I do it's usually smaller regional jets. Often any carryon larger than a backpack gets tagged at the gate and thrown into baggage with all the checked stuff. Which makes me wonder why the airlines bother charging anything at all if people can just take their huge ass bags to the gate and have someone hand deliver it to them (for free) when they land.

Off topic, but the new Greek Parliament is going to include members of a Neo-Nazi Party that actually won 7% of the vote. WTF

In my experience, checking bags isn't usually that much of a hassle. That's particularly true if you're just flying domestic. International flights can make it a bit more of a fuss.

My biggest problem with carry-ons is that the airlines, as far as I can see, do little to enforce their size restriction policies. I think I've only ever seen one person being told at the gate that their bag was too big. And it was practically a full-size suitcase -- just ridiculous.
Deep thought of the day: "I was adopted. I thank my birth mother every day for not aborting me (although I wouldn't doubt her decision if she did)."

Exactly. Stop them. Also, knock off the fees on a second checked bag (with some airlines, it's all checked bags).

Although, there is an airline (Spirit, iirc) that charges $100 for a carry-on at the gate.

Funny looking back so many years ago...passengers never carried anything on the plane except for a ladies handbag. Maybe a book or magazine under the arm. Comics for the kids. The only thing going into the overhead bin was a man's fedora.

Stewardesses came in two varieties...hot and hotter. I can remember steak and potato dinners in coach. And then people would sit back and light up...even cigars. And there was drink service galore. All kinds of service galore..

Flying seemed like a pretty classy experience back when I was a lad.

It was inaccessible, for the most part, to people without fancy, new lawnmowers, that's for sure.

I aspire to one day letting a hispanic gentleman tend my yard whilst I listen to the strains of Miles Davis on my veranda.

Tick,

I believe I said patio.

Anyway, I'm well off, no doubt. I make no apologies for it. I've earned every cent through my guile and genetically superior intellect. I would never hide it or let someone get under my skin for mentioning it.

I am the 1%.
